Like I said though, he had a good game yesterday. I know (myself included) that once a player annoys the f.uck out of you for so long, you can never see any good he does - see Thommo's posts for that.

Whatever

I would say hes probably playing at about 25-30% of his capability.
Thats what annoys me, not that he hasnt got talent but he never gives 100%

Point proven.

Thank you.

Cheer up KK, lets look on the positive side.

If Downing is turning teh corner along with Henderson then thank goodness we're beginning to see some value for money from 2 of what were Kenny's biggest gaffs. There's no hope for Carroll but at least these 2 are starting to show some prospects - all we've wasted now is 12 months of wages waiting for them to wake up!

Anyway, long may it continue, but every match is a test for Downing - if he and Hendo keep going til the end of the season then we'll have something to look forward to next year.

Downing clearly isn't a leader and didn't have the character during the difficult days to lift Liverpool out of their gloom, it was only when we got Sturridge, Coutinho etc..  and the tide turned that he had the confidence to lift his game. Arsewipe.

I've felt Downing has been good for a few months now.  Couldn't pinpoint the exact time he started turning for me, but ever since he started consistently holding down his starting spot. I'm pretty sure it was before January, but could be wrong.

Anyway, I kept saying at the beginning of the season I still felt Downing could do a job for us, and now I will brag to the rest of you for somewhat being right.  I've actually been quite impressed with him lately.  Regardless of the 2 goals in 2 games, I just feel he's really controlling that right side now.  He's working hard and always causing problems out wide.  I think part of the reason Suarez has been scoring like a mad man recently is because Downing is finally forcing some of those defenders to follow him out wide.

KK's signings aren't looking bad at this point.  Other than Carroll (who I still think could be a good player, but will never fit in with us) He brought in Suarez, Enrique, Hendo and Downing.  Hendo will hopefully be with us for years because It think he will be one of our best players by the time he's 25. Obviously Adam was beyond a complete bust.  Doni never made sense, and when we sell Carroll for around £10 million, that will be £33 million wasted I guess, plus the overpaid price for Downing.  Everybody wastes money, and the fact that Suarez is worth twice what we paid for him, and we got Enrique for so cheap is great.  And got paid way too much for Torres as well (in hindsight). Anyway.. I'm rambling a this point and I'm not even drunk.

I thought Downing was MOTM today to be honest.  Suarez did great, but when we were absolutely falling apart and getting trashed by spurs during periods, Downing stayed composed, kept us his job, wasn't making stupid decisions, and I felt he was still causing some unrest.

Our Stewie came good after he was told in mid December that if he wanted to leave then he could! Bit of a BR master stroke in my opinion. Let's face it BR is getting considerably more out of both Henderson and Downing than Kenny and Clarke ever did. It is almost like having a couple of new players. Suarez's goal count has also gone nuclear under BR.

Come on Thommo - Stewie has definitely got better. In fact a hundred times better than the 2012 model !! How do you think Johnson's playing - is he still on your players to hate list?  :grinning:

I dont have a hate list
I have a "I expect more from this player because he is an international and has genuine talent but for some reason isnt showing it" list
Johnson has come off my list due to his improvement over the last season and long may he continue
Downing is still on the list, but the last few months has seen him move down slightly. If he continues to score I cant complain can I?
But if he doesnt....

The BR talk seemed to do the trick with Downing !!

I agree that Glen is having a good season and seems to be enjoying life.

He's improved, yes, but is he really a Liverpool type of player?

For me, he's average personifed and if a decent offer came in over the summer (9 million) them id snap their hand off.

I'd would have taken nine quid for him last season and paid the taxi fare out of Liverpool !! It really annoys me that BR had to go to such drastic lengths to get the lad to do his fkg job. Previously he had been an utter disgrace and not worthy of the shirt. He also assisted greatly in Kenny's demise. Still not sure about him but at least he has started to make a serious contribution. Still not happy that he signalled to the Kop that they should shut up when he eventually had the decency to score a goal.

Not a massive fan and when you look at what we potentially have with Coutinho and his possible future value I certainly know what looks to have been the better deal. Downing however does have a little more experience and the kids were certainly left wanting earlier in the season when BR had very little choice other than to use them given the form of Downing and the likes. For the moment we have what we have and he gets my support as long as he continues to show the sort of attitude that is required instead of prancing around like a prima donna.

Telling the Kop to his"shhh" after scoring just 1 goal was not the smartest move on his part, i agree.

Hopefully his impoved form will raise some.interest, but i doubt anyone will pay the 20 million we did

Downing just took time to settle - he had shown he could do well in the prem previously and the transfer fee ( which isn't his fault ) weighed down on him a bit.

Now a year later he is playing his part in the current good form and needs to be recognised for that. He is scoring goals , setting up goals and forming an understanding with the RB and Suarez etc.

He has earned the continual chances to carry on his career at us and will be around next season.

It's good to see he is more productive that Ashley Young , Nani and Valencia combined.

Haven't at least two of those players had an injury ravaged season with long spells undergoing "treatment".

Valencia seems to have lost his way this season but for what it's worth when he was playing close to the top of his game (last season) I'd have swapped Downing for him with no hesitation.

btw, loads are giving Downing credit for his goal the other week, I thought he got lucky, with the goalie gone and only a defender on the line to beat Downing managed to blast the ball straight at the defender ! fortunately for us (and Downing) it went through the defenders legs.

Downing has improved but lets face it he couldn't have got much worse, he's now at least earning his pay check but for me there's still massive question marks against this fella's character, still a bit of a bottler in my book.

It’s gone from Rodgers trying to put him in the shop window to Downing doing a good enough job to warrant a place in the starting 11 purely based on his performances. I think people have gone a bit over the top on how well he has actually done and I think Rodgers will try to move him on in the summer because he just doesn’t fit the system that well. There are far better options out there if we are going to persist with a 4-3-3 and inverted wide forwards.

I’d be happy enough to see him leave in the summer with Tom Ince coming in as a replacement.
