i fancy us to beat them tomorrow night. we had enough chances over there to seal this tie and we will get plenty more so if suarez is on form we will wipe the floor with them. :nod

This game has a whiff of "Great European Nights At Anfield" about it and I believe it was trending on Twitter earlier today but that just might be fans trying to tweet the game up a  bit. I've been to all the big European nights at Anfield and some were the greatest sporting nights of my life. Chelsea 2005 and Barcelona in 2007 were off the scale and games against Juventus, Chelsea again in 2007 and Olympiakos were superb.

Forgive my indifference but as long as UEFA treat this competition like a poor Man's Champions League its difficult for me personally to get excited about it. As many of you know I am fortunate to go to quite a few Liverpool Games being a Season ticket Holder but I've passed on a ticket for tomorrows game.

I will watch it on TV with my 8 year old son and hope its a cracker but the reality is that we (my son and I ) are more excited about Wigan Away on March 2nd as we have tickets for that game and at £10 for him and £28 for me that's good value as opposed to £38/£19 for Zenit. In a recession its a consideration but I'm not sure I would feel so non plussed if it was a CL game ! I went to 2 of the 3 group games and enjoyed them but lets not kid ourselves here, its a competition on the wane and rumours are it is soon to be scrapped altogether.

How about UEFA award a CL place to the winners or scrap the whole thing ?

I know quite a few regulars who have passed up tickets which is a bit surprising but I think this is more down to the fact that our chances are pretty dam slim. Although some of the more optimistic fans are really excited.

Too be honest they are a very good attacking side who will probably score and without Sturridge, Coutinho and Borini I don’t see where 4+ goals will come from.

Been saying that for years, if they awarded a champions league place to the winners it would breathe new life into the competition as well as the domestic cup competitions in all the European leagues. Such a simple idea, why the hell dont UEFA do it?

Its a good point and I agree with it but as you will remember until we won in 2005 even the winners of the UCL didn't get in. They want to limit the number of clubs from each league in the comepetition and so if you had the UEFA league winners in next season you might have a potential scenario of the following:-

Say we won the UEFA and finished 6th in the league and Arsenal won the UCL (OK i know its far fetched) and finished 5th then us and Arsenal would take the places of the teams that finished 3rd and 4th, just imagine the uproar that would cause.

Another point is i think allowing the teams that finish 3rd in the UCL groups also diminishes the competition, I personally think it they should bring back the cup winners cup, as that would be the only competition of pure winners.

I'D like to see the Europa league scrapped and the champions league extended. It would encourage competition for 5th and 6th place in the league.

Also i think only the top team should qualify automatically from each league. That way you would have a much better champions league with better teams

The likes of

CFR cluj
Bate Borisov
BRaga

These teams all made it into the champions league. The likes of Atletico madrid and Napoli never

Teams like Cluj and Bate are their relative countries champions - they have more right being in the CL than a team coming 5th/6th in their respective league.

Also suggest you look at some of the teams that they have beaten over the years

Braga for example knocked us out of the Europa.

If the likes of Atletico want to get into the CL then they must qualify like everyone else.

There is nothing worse than people sanitising competitions to suit their own needs

I disagree.

The single most effective thing UEFA coudl do to raise the profile of the Europa is grant the winner a place in the CL qualifiers the following season.

Cluj are Romanian and Bate are Belarusian.

Romania are 31st in the Fifa world rankings Belarus 65th. Our u21 teams could win both their leagues.

I could name you 20 teams that never qualified for champions league that would beat both of them teams but they qualify for champions league because they win a league that is probably on comparison to our championship.

So what ?

Cluj during CL have beaten Roma and drew twice with Chelsea

Juventus and Zenit couldn't beat Bate when they were in the CL.

It's called the UEFA Champions League - not some super league where because a team is a champion from a lower ranked league they should be denied the chance to play in it.

The CL is a lifeline for these clubs and allow them and their league to stay in existence - the Europa League is also the same but on a lower level.

Teams play to win their title to allow them the chance to compete against the top teams in Europe.

Try thinking of the bigger picture instead of being so narrow minded.

Yesterday you were dismissing the ability of Juve compared to the Prem clubs and someone corrected you on your error and asked if you even watch the game - I would suggest the same.

My point exactly you muppet.

You are saying that because Juve beat Chelsea and drew they are automatically better than them

Juve are better than Chelsea. They have proven that over the course of this years CL.

Juve will beat Chelsea 9 times out of ten currently

But the point is you were dismissing the likes of Cluj etc being in the CL without any valid reason apart from Atletico and Napoli should be in ?!?

Also see Gala and Celtic have been at the end of your wrath to get rid of the unwanted teams
