It's something we all know but still it's worth a post.

Yeah saw that. Have a feeling he won't budge. Either he believes he can stay and fight for his place or the cynic in me says he's doing a 'Joe Cole' and is happy to sit on his wages for another three years, probably knowing he won't get the same kind of wages if he's offed to another club.

Not his fault that our club is foolish enough to waste our money on players like him. Any brittish player good enough to tie their own shoe laces will cost absurd amounts.

Taken from BBC Sports Day

The Northern Echo is reporting that Liverpool winger Stewart Downing is keen on completing a return to his former club Middlesbrough ahead of the Football League deadline for loan deals on Thursday.

It adds: "Boro chairman Steve Gibson is unlikely to fund all of Downing's hefty Premier League wage, but it is hoped Liverpool would agree to pay a significant chunk given he would not be moving to a top-flight rival."

Downing has struggled to cement a place in Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers' plans.

This sort of thing makes my blood boil!!  :veryangry

Both Downing and (more so) Cole have both totally underperformed, shown a complete lack of desire and neither seem to have any inkling of what a privilege it is to play for this great club. Yes the club was incredibly stupid to offer the deals it did to these two players! They are not the first and probably won't be the last (unless Rodgers has his way). But for either of them or both to just hang around getting paid a 'king's ransom' for barely any commitment to the cause, is to me highly offensive as a fan of over 40 years! :veryangry

The sooner both of them are out of the door the better. They are an embarrassment to the club! If the world of football was in any way sensible, then clubs should have the right to sack under performing players, in the same way that under performing managers are shown the door! Ever since the Bosman ruling, SKY and the rise of football 'agents' the power of the modern footballer has become a joke!  It is hard sometimes to maintain my love for football and I look forward to the day the Premier League bubble bursts!!  :veryangry  Rant Over!!

If we were to sell him I doubt we would get more than £7m.

1. Because he hasn’t done anything at LFC and his form has in fact deteriorated.
2. Perhaps more importantly — we want to get rid of him. This puts potential buyers in a very comfortable position.

Add these reasons to the fact his wages are probably very high and it makes it very difficult to sell him. He has been garbage and he obviously can’t deal with the pressure or expectations of our club. So it’s best to just get rid of him any way we can, be that temporary or permanent. Same goes for Carroll and Cole, I have more time for Henderson.

It boils my blood when I think of the Jan. 2011 and Summer 2011 transfer windows. They have to be the worst for us in modern times. Dalglish identified woeful players, Comolli "negotiated" ridiculous transfer fees.

even though he's a boro lad would he really want to drop down a league anyway? i'm not happy at the thought of us still paying most of his wages.

he's still a premiership player, just not at a club as big as liverpool. one of the weakest players mentally i've seen in a red shirt. he's better off at a club where the expectation is much less.

Do those worst transfers include Suarez, Coates and Enrique three out of the seven outfield players who were signed in that period? I can't think of too many fans who would be complaining about the signing of Suarez right now or Enrique after his recent performances. Coates will definitely form part of our defence for the future at £7 million it was a high value snip as far as I can see and if that's identifying bad players well ok then.

In terms of Carroll and Henderson Carroll will probably leave next summer at a loss though one has to wonder how much worse the FA Cup Final score could have got had Carroll not come off the bench that day. The jury remains out on Henderson for the long term though he was also effective on saturday against Wigan when he came on. Even Downing for all his faults did put a decent stint in at Wembley against Cardiff which helped get us back into the game that day.

All managers don't get it right with all of their signings. If Kenny's success rate was around 40% he was only slightly below Rafa who was only at around 50% with his signings. I also don't agree with this idea about British based players costing more on average than foreign ones. As I recall Rafa signed a number of over-rated foreign players who often failed to produce when it mattered i.e. Babel, Aquilani, Morientes and that's just three.

Downing hasn't delivered for Liverpool perhaps because he joined at the wrong time in his career but more probably to my mind because of the pedestrian movement in our midfield last season particularly after Lucas got injured. The lack of a right winger on the other side to complement him also didn't help. Confidence players like Downing are more effective when they are in teams that are not in transition.

Jeezuz H Christ  :wwww

Just when you thought you've heard everything along comes another "pundit" to tell you to back the f'uck up !

I now stand corrected.

Downing is brilliant, not his fault LFC didn't sign him when he was 15 and give him enough time to grow some nuts. When we did finally sign this ambitious hardcase would you f'ucking believe it ! Lucas goes and gets himself injured thereby slowing our already pedestrian midfield to a pace that even snails would laugh at , f'uck me how the hell can Stu perform now ? . Don't worry lads with a right winger on the other side of the pitch Stu will do just fine   :nod , Hold up ! what's that  ? No f'ucking right winger to help Stu out ???  You've gotta be kidding me ! How the fu'ck can we expect Stu to perform when the team clearly isn't built around him

Sack the Fu*king manager, obviously he hasn't a clue about how to  get some bottle out of a bucket of milk.

When I saw the Downing thread pop up I was kinda hoping to see something like "City offer 50M + Dzeko for Downing"

Potentially worst signing I can remember as far as value for money goes

He played well today. Positive, no mistakes, some good touches under pressure. Udinese were hardly the most motivated opposition, but you can only play what is put in front of you.

Credit where it is due for today.

Completely disagree mate.

Even when their right back was clearly carrying an injury Downing wouldn't take him on.  He has the pace but no belief in his ability.  Plenty have already called it - he's mentally weak.  Happy to let others take the responsibility.

He also gave away possession in a really dangerous place and they got a corner out of it.  It was daft play keeping the ball in by our left corner flag to save a throw, but just kicking it straight to the attacker.  He's a liability as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, Sterling pointing for a little through ball behind the defenders and instead he ran backwards and did that pass staight to their attacker, on another point he made a good run and pass through the middle to set up Suarez, why doesn't he do that more often
