He was pulling out of or just giving up on a lot of challenges and as usual more often than not was taking the easy option, even so, he was having by his standards a decent game. Having said that when we got the pen and he put the ball on the spot, I said to the missus "Aw christ not f'uckin' him !"

Just knew he'd fk it up, TBH he surprised me by hitting the post, instead of passing it back or sideways to someone else   :D

For some reason I still feel he could be an asset to us.

I have no reason at all for feeling that way, so I don't know what the f*ck I'm thinking to be perfectly honest.

Stewart Downing, as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.

As useful as a chocolate fire guard.

As useful as a solar powered torch.

As useful as a grave robber in a crematorium.

As useful as a condom machine in the Vatican.

As useful as a snooze button on a smoke alarm.

As useful as happy stickers on emo's.

As useful as a midget with a yo-yo.

was awful today, like he's been awful all season. One of the WORST transfers in our history and shouldn't be anywhere near our club.

Get rid...and get rid now

Sh.it in a moment of utter frustration I wrote something similar about Andy Carroll back in November but somewhere at the back of my mind I just had this strange feeling that Andy was going to get better!! I wish I had the same feeling about Stewie but he makes it really difficult to believe that is the case. His incredibly poor season has gone a long way to making Andy Carroll look a lot worse than he is. I think we have got to cut our losses with Downing. Even if we sell him for £8/10m there are younger players out there that wouldn't cost much more and would do a better job.

The penalty against Chelsea at Anfield should always have been given to Andy. He certainly deserved the opportunity to increase his goal count. The same could never be said of Downing who for the large part ponces around like an overpaid prima donna!

As for worst player of the season Downing has won it by a country mile and let's face it he wasn't without opposition !!

Downing took a season to get going at Villa

At times he has looked threatening but his confidence took a big knock early season as every chance he created was wasted.

There was a stat that 10 of the shots that hit the woodwork came from an assist by Downing or from the player himself. First game of the season he burst past two then smashed the bar , did it again on Monday smashing the bar.

He has been very disappointing but he has proved himself in the prem for a decent amount of time and will be given a second season to improve on this season.

downing out of all our signings has been the biggest dissappointment imo, he is in his footballing prime and he is an experienced player who has been in this league and at this level for near a decade. he`s an international too.
he definately has ability, he`s not far off being genuinely 2 footed which is rare and he is surprisingly quick but to put it quite bluntly he doesnt have the f****** bottle to use his attributes, he`s looks too scared of failure to try anything, other players would give their right arm to have his skill and pace.
i think part of the thinking behind us signing a few british players (although signing suarez, coates, enrique and even teixeira shows it wasnt as some have tried to make out) was that we needed to find a mental toughness especially in those games away from home against so called lesser sides.
never mind the hodgson, benitez or houllier era`s we have struggled against those types of teams since before evans`s time. i think our inability to put sides away that on paper we should be comfortably beating became such an issue that we as a club came to the conclusion that if we had to sacrifice a bit of techincal ability for mental toughness then so be it.
the problem is we bought british but never got the mentality (although carroll is now showing signs of that `up and at them` attitude). downing is like meireles, any sign of a 50/50 and he slows down to make it a 30/70 in favour of the opposition player. i dont expect everyone to be like graeme souness in those situations but i expect them to at least try and compete. people especially in the modern era may say i`m putting too much emphasis and looking too much into tackling which isnt a major part of the game anymore but the way i look at it is this, if you are prepared to lose a tackle, if you are prepared to lose all the small battles that happen all over the pitch then how do you expect to win the war?
when we were in our heyday other teams had great players, glenn hoddle was a majestic player, liam brady was superb as were the 2 dutch lads at ipswich muhren and thjissen, infact there were loads of good players around. the difference was that we had great players too but our players had that `eye of the tiger`. they didnt want to lose at anything, never mind a tackle or a result, our players stayed in bed for a week with depression if their drop of rain lost the race to the bottom of the window pane on the coach back to anfield after a away game.
maybe he will come good next season like he did in his second season at villa, maybe he`s one of those players that needs a year to feel totally settled and at home in an area, they are not robots after all.
the frustrating thing is that he has got the ability to be a superb player.

The money we paid will keep him here unless someone offers in
the region £15m then I think he would be let go.

Doubt and offer on that level will come in so we have to just hope
he can turn the corner and start making a contribution next season.

I would hope that Downing has some serious competition for his place
next year anyway not only via Sterling but also some new faces arriving
in the summer.

Maybe that will shift him but at this point we could be forgiven for feeling
perhaps not.

The lad looks shot to be honest and the final nail could be an omission
from the England squad which frankly he doesnt deserve to be part of
either.

Downing just doesn't do the good stuff often enough to have decent stats. It really is as simple as that. Every midfield player has missed shots and failed potential assists but their stats are better than Downings because they do the quality stuff far more often.Downing generally takes the easy option with a five to ten yard sideways or backwards pass. His shot against Chelsea that hit the crossbar was exceptional but I could count on one hand how many times he has attempted shots like that all season.

As for him coming good in his second season at Villa it's a valid argument but only if Villa were aspiring to win titles and get into the CL which certainly is not the case.It is about standards and Downing simply isn't mentally strong enough at this level.
