He never stands out in a game, barely creates chances for others and hardly ever scores. The only thing he has going for him is a good engine but thats not gonna be enough to play centre midfield for Liverpool.

A good engine was good enough to play for Liverpool when it was Dirk Kuyt doing it. If Henderson had missed that chance last night we'd have certainly known about it on here today.

I think its clear that he dosnt, he seems to be content to be a passenger in the majority of games. Compare him to Shelvey for example, Henderson is probably has better technique and skill but Shelvey isnt afraid to spray the ball around the park, try to make a chance or have a shot. He has the mentality of young hungry player trying to make a name for himself. Hendseron simply does not, he hides and lets others do the work for him, he just dosnt show enough on a consistent basis to show he is gonna be a quality player.

It's a fair comparison, I'd say. Shelvey does seem way more hungry. Hell, the lad stepped up to take a FK at Wembley late on. Granted, he put it in Row Z and I was cursing him for wasting a decent chance but he still stepped up. Spearing, for all of his limitations, doesn't hide either. Henderson, on the other hand, drifts along at the periphery of the action way too much for my liking. I'm not writing him off yet--he might eventually have an Andy Carroll moment and realize that he has the tools to make a fist of it in a red shirt--but I'm also not holding my breath.

Henderson is a great player and will get better . Yesterday he was everywhere just like Gerrard used to do. Anyone who doesn't rate him is wrong plain and simple

this notion that he doesn't stand out is such a british mentality thing and is evidence as to why the national team gets nowhere. because he's not flying into tackles and pinging shots in left right and centre, people thing he's contributing nothing. people who actually go to the game and watch the lad play could tell you that the lad is an important player in the system we play. he's a continuity player as i'd call it. not the out and out defensive player as lucas would be in a 3 and not the out and out attacking player as gerrard would be for example.

the comparison i'd make would be with chelsea under maureen. when they won two leagues they had a player called tiago who basically played this role. he never stood out as he had makelele behind him and lampard ahead of him who were more standout players. he was the water carrier and played it to perfection.

people saying he's "garbage" are utterly clueless. the kid is 20 years old ffs.

Him and Shelvey dominated the centre of the park yesterday against multi million pound established internationals - the both stood out against their opponents.

It was clear to see

I agree, the balance of Henderson and Shelvey was perfect. I like henderson and think he is a matter of time. However for me Shelvey is the one to watch.

Just to be clear, I'm not calling the lad "garbage" or anywhere near it. Nor am I denying that he had quite a good game yesterday. I do disagree that he's already demonstrated himself to be a "great" player and I've yet to be convinced that he's an "important" player for our system. At the moment, for me, he's a skillful young lad who's still learning his trade and who has, more often than not this season, been a little over-awed by the prospect of playing for Liverpool Football Club. Like most, I hope he gains confidence and poise, grows into the shirt, and silences doubters like myself. Having seen other promising youngsters fail to make the step up, though, I know it's not a given that he'll be a success for us. He does, however, deserve the chance to make his mark in a red shirt and performances like the one he turned in yesterday can hopefully act as a platform for his future success.

i wasn't referring to you bob

it's clear he's been overplayed in comparison to what we originally planned when we brought him imo, mainly due to the injuries to lucas, gerrard and adam throughout the season. he's also been asked to fill in out of position on the right because we still haven't addressed that problem in our side.

i saw a recent interview with him when he admitted that he hadn't performed and had been a bit overawed when he came here but i've seen him taking more responsibility recently and long may it continue.

It's a good point you make about being over-played. I'm sure the plan was to bed him in much more slowly, working him into the midfield with the likes of Gerrard, Lucas and Adam around him to help him find his feet. As it happened, he was thrown in at the deep end pretty much from the first kick of the ball in August (how many matches has he started?) and has been asked to fulfill a number of different roles. I suppose it's not unlike Lucas's early days and one can only hope things take a similar course for Hendo.

how is he being over played? hes played first team football at Sunderland for 2 years, hes not some 18 year old straight out of the academy hes a full England international. If you cant handle playing first team football at the age of 21 then your not gonna make it in this game, name me one top class player who wasnt a regular for there team at Hendersons age. Jack Wilshire, Aaron Ramsay, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Kyle Walker, Daniel Sturridge,Danny Welbeck and Alex Oxlaide Chamberlain seem to be doing fine and there young players aswell. When Steven Gerrard was 21 he was one of the best in his position in the league.

but most of them arent regulars, ramsay was actually booed recently by the arsenal fans (classy bunch), phil jones has gone right off the boil and has hardly figured recently, smalling hasnt had that much game time and is currently carrying the can for allowing kompany score and thus blowing the league, chelsea fans are actually on sturridge`s back and his performance yesterday didnt help his cause, welbeck is a bit part player who comes off the bench and so is chamberlain.
most young players are inconsistent but modern football fans arent interested in facts like that.
oh and yeah, compare henderson to the best player thats ever played for the club why dont you?

Well supposedly hes Gerrards replacement so i dont think its unfair to compare them at the same age. The players ive mentioned before have all contributed to there teams a lot more than Henderson has and our of a similar age, a lot of our fans seem to excuse Hendersons faults being down to his age and lack of experience, when A hes not that young and B hes been a first team regular for 3 years now. Now i know no player is complete at 21 but considering his reputation and price and i dont thinks it too much to expect a good player. Whether your 16 or 30 if you have talent it will be seen, obviously the younger the less consistent you will be, but in Henderson case he is consitently rubbish with the odd decent display here and there. He was bought to help take us to the next level, can anyone honsetly say that he is better than Aquliani or Mereires, hes not even as good as Jonjo Shelvey who is his junior

This lad has something about him I think. Good mentality for a young lad, has shown strength of character time and again by coming back from poor performances with the crowd on his back to produce good performances like against Chelsea at Anfield the other night. Great engine, tenacious and in spells has shown he can finish, tackle and pick a pass.

His decision making and consistency will improve with age. The game time he has had this season will stand him in great stead for next season. I have absolutely no doubt this will be money well spent in years to come.
