A case for the defence - Major overhaul?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Apart from the MOTD clip I haven't seen enough of the game to really judge but going by comments on here it seems Skittle & Agger should be our 1st choice pairing. For me it also cements my opinion that Carra can't and shouldn't be considered a 1st choice any more.

Carra has been my favourite player for years now, but he is looking like the reason we sit so deep.  However I think we still need to stick with him unless we buy someone who could come straight into the team in Jan.  I still cant believe we didnt go for Cahill or Shawcross in the summer as both players would currently walk into our back 4 and improve it significantly
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

I don't get this Cahill love in. We need a centre half who's dominant in the air above anything.

i don't think we need anyone else i thought we looked very good against the bomrdment from Delap against stoke and in particular thought Carroll really added to our arial defense along with Agger and Coates who is young and has the height to be dominant in the air once he's settled in to the english game.

as i've said before i'm a massive fan of Carra but there comes a time when the legs just can't take the pace anymore especially when he wasn't blessed with blister pace to start with.

exactly. there's no place for sentiment in footbal, simple as.

you only had to hear ferguson the other day saying how ferdinand (who is still a better player than carra) isn't guaranteed to start at united anymore, evemn when fit.

you have to look to the future and the skrtel-agger partnership now needs a run of games to develop.

I dont trust Skrtel.  I think if we are looking to move Carra aside then we need to go with Agger and Coates

I've never been his biggest fan but he's been excellent recently. Been one of our best players along with Suarez and Enrique and seems to have regained his confidence and form.

He has played well recently with Agger, however he doesn't fill me with confidence, you feel as tho theres a mistake in there somewhere trying to get out.

and 4 of those came in one game, 3 of which were when we were down to 9 men. our problems have come at the other end of the pitch. city for example have score nearly 30 goals more than us in 13 games.

that back four we fielded yesterday needs a consistent run of games together now. i thought the two fullbacks especially were outstanding.

I think the fact we seem to be able to not play so deep when we have Agger and Skrtel playing it gives us more defensive options.  I would like to see Coates given some time as when we bought him there was a lot of chat about how good he could be, but he hasnt really had a look in yet.

Agger is, in my opinion, our best defender, but there is always the underlying question with regards to his injuries.  Lets hope this is behind him now and we can get a really good run out of his as when he plays we are a better team.

Johnson looks like he has stepped us recently and looked great against Chelsea, Enrique is the best left back in the Premiership, and we have Kelly and Robbo as cover.  Who would have though we would be so strong in these positions.

Not sure on Skertel and Agger.

1) As many have said, Skertel is an accident waiting to happen you feel.
2) Agger I don't think is long term, we won't get a full season out of him, we never have - therefore for a partnership to blossom where Agger is concerened we're pi$$ing in the wind.

I didn't think Skertel and Agger looked that great yesterday against Chelsea the acid test for them will be against Citeh next week. Long term, personally, I'd like to see Kelly and Coates try and form something at some stage. Until/if that ever happens I guess Skertel, Carra and Agger will be 1st choices, with the latter two for me being the best pairing.

As I said in another thread, our defense is no longer a problem. We all thought that this season we'll do well in attack but we'll also concede a lot but it's actually the other way around. Agger and Enrique are probably one of the best defenders in the world and the partnership between Agger and Skrtel might be one of the best in the prem. Our attack or actually our finishing this season is far from what we expected to be. We've hardly scored a third of the chances that we have created. That is probably due to a lack of a good finisher, even though we have a 35 million striker in our team.

i purely judge skrtel on what he's doing right now and quite simply his form has been excellent so he deserves to be in the side. agger is the best defender at the club so should play when fit. i personally think it's healthy that carragher now has to win his place in the side back.
