We also need to remember that 20M is no longer the massive fee it was once considered. The rate for most top name CM's and strikers is 30M +.

£20m for a player like Downing is the going rate!
Relishing watching these new players in action.
And I also don't see all the fuss over signing defenders and LB in particular.Insua could come back a much better player.If he had been given the time to settle that Lucas was given i am sure he'd be comfortable in the LB slot.

Insura for me doesnt have the pace or dynamic play to get up and down the line and become a true attacking full back! Kelly has it, Johnson has it, Robinson I believe will have it, and Flanagan has shown at times he has it too!!

Cant wait to see Adam and Downing in the first 11 next season, 2 cracking left footers whipping balls into Suarez feet or onto Carrolls head!!

Graham -Beeky- Beecroft (Journalist and Liverpool FC Fan) mentioned yesterday -on Talksport- that the limit on foreign players may increase.

At the moment (taken from an article on BBC New online)

"Football's governing body Fifa has endorsed president Sepp Blatter's 'six-plus-five' principle, which would limit a team's foreign players to five.

He wants to bring in the proposal by 2012/2013..............."

Ok, though the above was written some time ago, Beeky, from what i can remember, mentioned that it could go to 7 or 8 home grown players. As such, Liverpool FC know that sooner or later, a decision or ruling on foreign player limits will be made/set and could very well mean that a lot of clubs have to do a lot of work to comply.

Liverpool FC are trying to buy (best) british players and build upon this "now" to avoid all the hassle later on.

I know the premiums for british players are very high, but i guess it's better to get those players that KK feels that can improve the team now and not wait until the ruling comes in to play.

If there was an issue with money (i.e. debt, interest, etc..) then worry about the money, otherwise don't worry about the money, simple. This is the first full transfer window under the new owners and they are bringing big money to the table. If we can get a top four spot, the club will look more attractive to players around the world and lessen the premiums on fees plus give us more negotiating power with smaller clubs. One step at a time.

The only negative I would say about the Downing transfer (and some may say it is actually a positive) is his age. 27 is not "old" but doesn't fit the owners business plan for the club, and for players whose game is based on pace and beating players off the dribble, there isn't going to be much resale value after a few years.

Amazed to see how many people are already aboard the Downing bandwagon and busy slagging off anyone who questions his potential worth to the club.

None of them in previous seasons have mooted Downing as a good signing for LFC but now that Kenny's gone in for him Downing is suddenly the answer to all our problems on the flanks.

IMO Downing is Mr Fcking Average, in all honesty I'd prefer it if we'd spent £20 mill on a key position in the back four and shoved Glen Johnson into a wide midefield role, but what the fk do I know, just trying to express my reservations about the signing of a player who has NEVER lived up to the speculation/hype thats surrounded him.

Despite my reservations he's now a red and he'll receive my support, hopefully he'll prove how wrong me and other doubters were about him OR maybe he'll show that the reasons for our lack of enthusiasm about his signing were not unfounded.

In the meantime this is a forum where opinions are expressed, so whilst we debate Downings abilities can we lay of the rush to condem those whose opinion of a player may differ from yours, as many have said he hasn't kicked a ball for us yet, we'll soon find out who was right and who was wrong.

Most of the negative towards Downing all stems from anytime he has played for England - for club over the last number of season he has lived up to his expectations - putting the ball in the box and creating chances from a wide area - as well as chipping in with goals . The Boro fans rated him , The villa fans rated him higher than Young .

When people bemoan paying 20 mil for Downing they are asked who should of been bought instead and the usual names come up - some foreign "wonderkid" who has yet to justify any hype and is totally unproven in the prem ( not pointing my finger at you here )

As i said earlier Kenny seems to be building a team and not just getting individuals - players who have proven themselves in the prem and who have experience in the prem - we are not in Europe so we need to rebuild ourselves back up and we need to reign in the expectations a bit .

Downing will give us exactly what we need - width , dragging oppos defenders out wide to create gaps for Suarez and Co to take advantage off , constistant good delivery into box for our 35 mil forward to thrive on , as well as good set piece delivery .

I really wished we'd signed Ashley Young in January. To me he was(is) the better player over Downing. Is Downing a better partner for Carroll/Suarez? Maybe that's the point, maybe he is. Not going to slag him off before he's kicked a ball.

we all know downing isnt the world class signing we all crave, but looking at his form last season and the way kenny can get another 10% out of players he should be a good signing for the club.
plus charlie adam and jordan henderson are average players as well, but with the support and kenny getting extra from them they can go from average players for liverpool to becoming great players.
adam was world class compared to the rest of the blackpool team, downing as well, henderson didnt stand out to me as one of sunderlands great players but they obviously stand out to kenny, and thats enough for me, i can honestly say, yea over priced but i think everyone will be surpirsed with this signing. lets be having ye mr downing #19

There was a 3 year period when Downing was touted as potentially the best wide player in the premiership, he never fulfilled that "potential", maybe that why he remained with such world beating clubs as Sunderland, Middlesboro and Villa

Having not had the opportunity to watch this fella play since his Boro days, I can't really comment...

Nah, feck it, I'll throw my two cents worth into the mix.

The key questions for me are whether he improves the team and whether there was someone else better suited to fill that position. ON the first question it would seem clear that he will improve the team. Left midfield has been one of our primary problem positions for years now and we've had to make due with a number of makeshift options there, most notably the likes of Maxi, Benayoun and Babel--none of whom were known for providing width or whipping in a good cross. With Carroll at the head of the attacking spear now and with Suarez doing his magician act 'between the lines' we need someone who will maintain width and whip in some crosses. Downing would seem to fit that bill.

Are there others that we might have bought that can do it better? Perhaps but I don't think it would be a massive pool. Proper left-footed wide players are a rather rare commodity in the game. I can't think of any players in England that are better than Downing and who would come to us from their current club. As for foreign prospects, our lack of European football might be a deterrent and there's no guarantee that they'd adjust to the league.

With Downing we get a lad who knows the league, is coming off a decent season, is a proper left-footer with a good cross on him and someone that clearly wants to be part of what Kenny's building. I'm cautiously optimistic he'll do the business for us.

I don't get how all these people are saying In Kenny we trust and how they support Kenny and the dealings but pick apart every player they sign.

I'm fine with opinions, it's just funny when SOME, NOT EVERYBODY, BUT SOME people contradict themselves so badly.

Clearly they have a plan that's headed in a different direction and a different method than you guys see, and I think it's quite clear where they are going.
