i wish Owzat was still around to dig up some stats on him. there must be something eyecatching.

I was responding to ciggy's post and not trying to justify why we should buy him because the Mancs are interested :talktothehand

And? I dont care who the Mancs want I only care about Liverpool and if we are signing a midfielder he has to be world class this lad isnt not yet anyway.
Our CM is the reason we have finished 7th and 6th the past two seasons because its not good enough, I still dont see all the fuss about Lucas either the praise he has received is OTT in my opinion, most consistant player last season YES best player? NO.

I really think we need to improve in this area and signing an unproven player for 20 million is a big gamble when other areas need improving also, the wings ecspecially.

Also if we pay an inflated price for him imagine how much we are going to be held to ransom for other targets  :suspect:

I was only responding to your post when you said no top club was in for him.

However, I think I'm going to trust Kenny, Comolli and the scouting team if they pull off this signing. Kenny can spot talent, he is great at that and he built great sides before, that's why I'm optimistic.

I dont know what the plans for next year are, but i assume signing this lad will mean that either Shelvey or Spearing may be sent on loan?  We're only going to have 40 odd games next year and we already have Gerrard, Meireles, Lucas, Shelvey, Spearing.  I assume Poulsen will be gone.  And we might also be signing Adam.

Just can't see what we'll do with all these midfielders.  Wait and see i guess.

With such a shortage of games though, i imagine the dross will be gotten rid of and several youngsters going on loan

All I have seen from the various newspaper editors on Twitter is that the fee is likely to be around £12m (plus optional add ons).

What we have to get used to is with the FFPR coming into effect as of this transfer window, big spends have to be carefully considered even more. Is a £25-£30m spend on a 28 year old wise?

What Liverpool are doing, and many of the big clubs in Europe, are investing in young talent. £10-15m spend on a 21 year old not only offers massive potential in growth but also is far less risky if the transfer fails. The contrast between the damage a £12m write off has compared to a £30m write off is clear.

What Kenny and the management team are doing are identifying talent that are not unfamiliar with the Premier League (i.e. already a regular in the first team) and also have the potential to grow.

Jordan Henderson may well not of turned heads but he is already a first team regular for Sunderland and a youth international. With the resources Liverpool have and a new playing environment he could develop into a star. Depth of squad comes from youth upwards.

I had a horrible thought this morning.  Not long ago there where "rumours" that Gerrard was finished, his groin had had that many operations that the surgeon had no good tissue to repair him again.

Are we looking to stregthen the middle of the park because gerrard is not coming back.  Would the club want to advertise that our club captain was going to retire, if they did this could cause 2 problems.

1 - Centre Midfielders may suddenly become even more expensive knowing we would be desperate for a replacement
2 - Playing with a player like Steven Gerrard ay attract targets to coming to Liverpool.

Far fetched?  maybe?  I hope I am wrong and we start next season with our captain and a host of new players.
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

I think he'll be back mate.  He has said so himself and Steve Clarke also said he couldnt wait for him to be back.  I did hear the rumours though and they're very worrying.  I heard we'd sign a couple of players first and then announce his retirement, hope its bolli.x.

Even if he does come back though, its very hard to tell how/if his groin will hold up.

and if he does come back will he get into the team. to be fair he's been passed his best for at least a season now. playing either injured or with a cant be ar$3d attitude - either way he's not much good to us like that.

dont get me wrong I would love him to be on the pitch next season but not on the team sheet just because he's 'steven gerrard'.

I don't think you could be more wrong.

A fully fit Gerrard is still WORLD class. The Napoli game last season only goes to prove that. A second half hattrick without even breaking a sweat, in a game where Napoli easily out played us.

The problem is some on here are too quick to write a player off based on one season. We have to stop being knee jerk! Imagine if Kenny took that approach for the next three years, we'd be replacing the squad every 2 years!

IF Gerrard recovers and is fully fit next season, he will be explosive as ever.
