The LMA, the LFC squad and the press are all defending Roy.

LMA wants appraisal system
Bevan voices concerns over 'chronic short-termism' in football

..The League Managers Association has suggested that a club appraisal system and a process of written warnings could be a solution to the trend of 'short-termism' in English football.

Seven Football League bosses have lost their job in the last week, while sack speculation is raging over the future of Chelsea's Carlo Ancelotti, Liverpool's Roy Hodgson, Aston Villa's Gerard Houllier and West Ham's Avram Grant.

LMA chief executive Richard Bevan has therefore decided to release an open letter of criticism for the current situation and he has suggested that clubs should follow a system of regular internal assessments.

Bevan said: "No-one is saying that a club should never change manager. The football context changes over time, the circumstances of individual football clubs alter, the goals of employer and employee may no longer match.

"In this unfortunate circumstance, it would seem most sensible for both sides if lessons were adopted from the broader field of human resources to handle this type of situation. Football managers might, for example, like any other type of manager, have regular appraisals.

Hiring and firing
"In these, the strengths and weaknesses of how the football side of the club is performing might be assessed against realistic expectations and previously, mutually agreed goals.

"Should the performance of a manager not match up to the agreed goals, or be judged unsatisfactory on appraisal, then a due process of verbal, followed by a written warning is the correct procedure, before ever reaching the final step of dismissal."

Bevan also believes that a hiring and firing routine does not improve the performance of clubs.

He said: "The figures actually serve to highlight the continued chronic short-termism in football manager employment.

"Statistical evidence suggests that the gains from changing football managers are marginal, if indeed there are any at all, and without doubt the sacking of managers is a costly business to football clubs."

I think he actually raises some valid points, unfortunately none of these apply to Roy. But I would argue that Chelsea are not getting a better manager than Ancelotti, for example, and I think his point about statistics showing that changing managers results in marginal benefits at best is bang on.

The idea of internal performance reviews or whatever though, is just plain stupid. Does he think clubs choose to sack managers before doing any sort of performance review, regardless of how unofficial it may be?

Anyway, his point is well taken, that owners are too quick to change managers these days, even though the evidence suggests that it is not typically all that beneficial.

Unfortunately in Roy's case, I think we could expect more than a marginal improvement with someone else in charge. For all the stick Benitez took, at least he was at the touchline most of the game, giving specific instructions to players, making sure the team kept their shape, etc. He was always yelling something or other, or doing one of his cool hand gestures. Roy just seems out of his depth, standing there hoping the players will sort things out for themselves.

Not true. Many journalist for reputable papers (The Times, Telegraph, etc) feel sympathy for Hodgson but admit his position is completely untenable (that means undefendable to save you a trip to the dictionary).

whichisfair wrote:So I don't post here much, but I can't help myself now given the recent hysteria surrounding the reds and Roy Hodgson. I would like to make a few points:

1) I, like most, would like to see Roy sacked, and sooner rather than later. However, I fail to understand the vitriol with which he is attacked by LFC fans. The insinuations that he is in cahoots with Sir Alex, etc. are just ridiculous. The man's obviously trying his best and is certainly not deliberately throwing games. There is a right way and a wrong way to call for the sacking of a manager. The fact is that as long as he's here we're in this together. When he does get the sack, we should all act with a little bit of dignity, thank the man for his efforts, and move on. Acting like he is purposely trying to sabotage the club is pointless, juvenile, and counterproductive, not to mention it tarnishes the reputation of the so-called greatest fans in the world.

2) Attacking Henry, Werner, and NESV. This makes little to no sense. Sure, I would have loved to see the axe fall after the Wolves game, but in the grand scheme of things, IT DOESN'T REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE. It is next to impossible that we finish in the top four, even with a new manager installed immediately, and it is equally unlikely that we will be relegated, even if Hodgson is given the rest of the season. Sure, we may finish mid-table, but what's the difference between 8th and 12th at this point? The season is lost; we need to accept that, as NESV have obviously done, and start thinking about next year. I don't think Roy will last the season, and I'm certain he won't be in charge for our next campaign. The timing at this point is almost irrelevant. I would much rather NESV take their tame and make sure they do things the right way than shoot from the hip like the last cowboys we had here. NESV is a proven sports management outfit, they are not buyout-leverage merchants like we had before, and I have confidence that they understand the nature of the LONG-TERM plan needed to get this club back to where it belongs.

3) Protests. Please, please, please, people, don't march in front of Anfield or Melwood or wherever demanding the owners sack Hodgson. It's just stupid, and it's not on. HE IS ALREADY GOING TO BE SACKED, and THE SEASON IS ALREADY LOST. These are inevitabilities, and such protests and marches make us all look like stupid immature reactionaries.

In summary, I would plead with all LFC fans to be patient, get behind the team and NESV, and cut all the vitriol and personal attacks. Just chill.

Oh, and Hodgson out.

Not sure if your an alter-ego, but regardless, that is the best post I've read for a long time.

Mr Henry is going to find his cult status of hero for rescuing the club from Hicks and Gillett diminish to that of villain if he persists in retaining Roy Hodgson for many more weeks.

Having said that I imagine he'll either go after we lose to United or if we don't beat Blackpool next week. If we do beat Blackpool I don't think he'll go till May.
