J.Cole hasn't set the league a light since his move here, he needs to start producing the goods, hopefully he'll start this against Spurs.

Its hard to set it alight with the :censored:

he was playing with though, when him, Torres, SG linked up it looked like the start of something very promising, however, hes not been given the freedom he needs and the play isnt as hugh tempo as he needs to flourish, which is a shame.

Part of the problem is in the way the team plays, because sitting deep and playing essentially on the counter - rather than pressing higher up and laying seige to a team in their own half - necessarily means you spend less time in the areas of the pitch where players like Cole are most effective. Equal to that is that when Cole has had the opportunity to produce a cross or a shot, or make a bit of space, he's been found wanting. The assist v Blackburn is a good example of why we bought him, though - not many players can produce a cross of that quality with their weak foot. We just need to see more of that, and a bit more work rate off the ball wouldn't do any harm, either.

This is probably the most difficult phase of his career. He HAS to start putting consistantly good performances together otherwise he will be known as a major flop.

Well, when was the last time we shelved out the needed money to buy a teen prodigy?

Walcott and Bale comes to mind as do Ronaldo. 10 million+ for a teen? Oh no..... too much. Sure they have a couple of rough seasons but when they start producing you thank your luck star you only shelved out 15 million....

i do agree that he shouldn't walk straight back into the team. i think it will only be a good thing if he is made to fight for his place-which is the it should be! still think he is a very good footballer though,imo you don't become a bad player over night.

i feel that his ban & injury's haven't helped him also,but that's where he needs to show his character-i hope he does come good for us,i honestly think he will but agree he needs to his finger out.

finally also think his mind set should be to get into playing just behind torres & get stevie back in midfield,once he get's back on form that will be a benefit to the side alround.

Again Penguin I think there were fingers burned with the Ryan Babel transfer: teen prodigy, athlete and buckets of potential so we dished out a shed load of cash (£11.75m IIRC) but when we signed him I remember a few Ajax fans coming on here and saying what we all know now - that he is a lazy bum that couldnt give a sh*t. Couple that with the lack of financial input after H&Gs initial surge and we have reasons why we stopped going after those players. But I think the sounds John Henry has made and the appointment of Comolli means this is the avenue we will be heading down from here on out. Personally I believe its the way a team should be built by investing in youth and mixing with the right amount of experience so if its our new transfer policy Im all for it.

Its not like it happened overnight though is it? He was not exactly chelseas star player in the last season(s).

It would be a shame if joe cole breaks up one of the best partnerships in the premier league (stevie/torres). Cole has never been a big goalscorer either, but gerrard is.

The problem for cole is probably the same as for the rest of our attacking players, the "tactics". It does not help that we have way to many players that want to play in the same position.

We got a £5.5M fee for him

In return we got a experienced homegrown player of proven quality.
A fully contracted joey cole would've costed what? on the open market, 7, £8M?
Lets not forget yossi was hardly an iron man when it comes to the treatment table

All in all i'd say we done an excellent trade with chelski

I really want him to do well and produce for us now though

I'm sure he historically raises his game against spurs (or maybey i'm making that up?), anyway he must be doing it in training if he gets a start over Maxi (has he ever scored a header in his career).

Joe Cole should be eased back if we want him to have a positive impact on our season.

I agree, the benefit of this is when you buy 3x £10m players you have a good chance that 1 of them could turn into a top player, you can then also sell the other two at little loss. When you buy 1x £30m player then if he fails you lose out badly.

Wenger's done this for years and although he's not achieved in terms of winning the league he certainly has a team that can play excellent football. If we can get the right mix then hopefully we'll be on to a good thing.
