but then its also obvious that the boardroom rubbish didn't cause him to court gareth barry over alonso, thus driving out the player that really made a difference to our play. neither did they force him to buy players and not play them, nor play others out of position on a regular basis.

a final analysis would be very difficult and i don't think seeing the last 3 years of rafa's reign being gone over with a fine toothed comb is really going to benefit any of the involved parties. its harder for some than for others but we do need to move on.

People talk to each other in football all the time, and although I'm obviously not Benitez's biggest fan, I wouldn't hold the fact that he looked after himself against him.

As I seem to recall it that was never the issue for many, certainly myself. The issue was, i) going public with it, and ii) "it", in fact, being an agreement to take the job were Rafa to leave. Klinsmann, a man with no experience managing at club level (at the time), was a very risky candidate indeed.

No he'd managed at bayern Munich mate. Didn't uproot trees but wasn't a disaster. Disclaimer-I'm not saying I wanted him as manager.

So, you're saying you would have been well happy with him as our manager?

BTW, I believe he took over at Bayern after Gillett/Hicks approached him. If that was in-season, which I believe it was, then he might have been one of the most respectable candidates available at short notice, in which case fair enough on that point. Still, you don't go public with it, let alone mid-way through a season. Seeing who's available and having contingency plans makes sense, though, no question.

Klinnsman had NOT managed at Munich when he was offered the LFC job, he took over at Bayern for the 08-09 season and confirmed the deal in Jan of 08, after he had been sounded out by Gillett and Hicks Link

i wouldnt have been happy with klinsmann at the time and thought it was terrible of the owners to publicly announce that they were interested in him.
typical of them really :no

i still think WHEN RAFA GOT SACKED, it was the right decision though.
For reasons i have previously stated.

But tonight i dont care at all.

To answer the thread title, of course it was the right thing to sack Benitez. From finishing second in the league, he had almost £40M players to spend on strengthening the squad. More money than any of the other big teams. He didn't spend the money as well as he should have, as we all know. He also alienated Alonso, the player we have missed most of all.

Benitez was the main reason we declined from 2nd to 7th in the space of a year - NOT the owners. H & G got the flack for a poor performing team when it was Benitez's poor signings and team selections that caused the downfall. Benitez simply blew it. He blew the money for transfers on many average players which stopping us from progressing any further forward.

You don't think it's logic that bad transfers causes a team to decline? If not, what's your logic? Roy's signings have only been there for 5 minutes - give them a chance. I would hardly say he has wasted his transfer budget.

This argument has become less crucial, now that there is a change in owners. Roy is very very lucky, now he will have some cash injection in the Jan transfer window to turn the team around. And the club will not have anymore debt. Meaning each season we will be able to spend money to build the team rather than sell to buy. At the same time there will be no excuses for him anymore... I wonder what targets the new owners will set for him this season. I would maintain though at the time under the prevous owners and our financial situation, it was a bad mistake by the board to change managers from Rafa to Roy. Didn't make sense whatsoever.

As close to fourth as possible. I dont think we`ll get there this season, also with a possible 2 or 3 first teamers coming in the next window there will be a lot of disruption and probably not a lot of consistency.
Next season though I`m sure CL will be a must, Roy will no doubt be judged from now untill the end of the season on wether they think he can get us there.

I agree. The signings Roy has made so far shouldn't be judged until the end of the season, although some - if they don't produce the goods - may lose their places to new signings in January.

BTW, you need to change your signature again!
