Gutted that Aquilani is going but you always have to try to take good from these things.

We will have more money to fund transfers from him leaving.

Why will we have more money? He is going onloan - no transfer fee to add to our transfer budget of Zero

We wont have to pay the appearence fee clauses that we had agreed in the transfer.

Plus thats 70k off the wage's that can be used for whatever.

The team was changed too much last night. As far as Aquilani's future is concerned if he'd not good enough now what difference will further experience of Serie A make? It's clear that Hodgson prefers Poulsen who he knows more about than Aquilani. If Aquilani goes on loan for 8 months I can't see him returning. If it happens I think he'll have played his last game for the club.

It's a joke competition.

Anyway, Acqilani is fit to carry Alonso's jock strap.

You know, try as I might to get worked up about this news, I can't.  I'm unable to shake the feeling that Aquilani just wasn't up to it and was going to be shipped back to Italy before too long anyway (and that includes if Rafa had stayed on as manager).  Sure, selling him would be preferable but, given his mare of a season last year, we wouldn't get much return on whatever sum it was we paid for him.  In those circumstances, loaning him back to a league where he's familiar and rated in order to raise his value isn't a terrible strategy.

Read above : Less wage bill that can be put into transfer fund. No appearence fee money.

I think it's a bad decision. It smacks of Hodgson hedging his bets a few weeks ago on seeing who would leave and whether Aqua would impress in training. Surely if he's not good enough he should be sold now. I suspect that Hodgson doesn't think he'd get half of what Liverpool paid a year ago and that by going on loan and impressing in Serie A will add a few million to his fee. Hodgson probably also thinks Liverpool would have to haggle too much to sell him now. The lack of any imminent deal for Mascharano and his continued prescence has probably contributed to this announcement. Fair enough if he's not good enough then he should go but it's clear that he's never been given a fair crack of the whip. I also doubt whether the player is really that desperate to play every week.

Sorry mate I can't see it working that way  - only way we can get funds is to sell - they have just managed to slash our wage bill further down .

I can see a loan back to Italy being beneficial to his value, but I'm not convinced that outweighs what he might offer the the team this season. You don't get with Lucas, Masch and Poulsen what you get with Gerrard, Cole or Aquilani and that's the ability to open the play higher up the pitch. The problem is that while Gerrard and Cole are in the team, he'll be on the bench and relying on cup games or injuries to get in the team; and that's a risk his to value. I suppose we'll have to wait and see how we fair in his absence before we declare it an "awful" decision.

Also wonder what Sir Roger aka "Thommo's Perm" thinks of the news. He's as pro-Roy and pro-Aquilani as they come.  :eyebrow

Its all assumptions though. Neither of us know what will happen with the money.

Im just saying it could possibly allow more flexibility for Roy in the transfer market.

Im the opposite to you Bad Bob and LFC2007 on this one.

I dont think this will do any favours to his value at all.

His contract is just going to run down and If he enjoys his time in Juventus he might be reluctant to leave and hand in a transfer request.

Our budget is zero mate - there is no flexibility on zero - the only money spent is money coming in on transfer fees - we couldn't even afford to pay up the full Poulsen fee up front and had to do it in instalments .

All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

The prob is greavsie he should be playing , he should be next to masher with gerrard behind Torres and cole out wide - he showed in his little cameos last season he has the ability to score and create

Wow , you've got confidence haven't you !

I really don't think the wages saved will go into the transfer pot. It seems we are just about cutting costs. Letting players go and bring in cheap replacements
I doubt we'll get every penny from Masch's transfer , if he goes.
