If Hodgson decides to play Cole in behind and Torres allowing Gerrard to drop back into the centre of midfield, where he can be a real force, then that would give the team a great spine and set-up. Obviously providing the likes of Torres and Cole can stay fit for long period of time. This Premier League transfer blog reckons the signing of such a marquee player could help convince Mascherano to stay - i doubt this as he seems to have his heart set on following Benitez. But the move for Cole fills me with real optimism about life under Hodgson as he seems to have a plan to take Liverpool forward and in one single move has increased significantly the creativity of the side.

If Cole does play in behind Torres, and you look at a sensible front 6 which are now available, the whole thing locks together with much more balance than we saw last season.

If you compare this:      Kuyt  Gerrard  Masherano Riera         to this:            Kuyt Lucas Masherano Benayoun

                                                 Cole                                                                       Gerrard

                                                Torres                                                                      Torres

You can see what a huge difference one new player and a new manager could make. To me the first line up has balance (particularly with Johnson playing in behind Kuyt), creativity and goals from midfield. Riera I've put on the left because I think it's vital for balance that you have left footed players in the team. In the first version, the dreaded Lucas/Masherano axis has been broken up, and you only have to look at the stats of how that worked last season to see it was a disaster from start to finish. If Masherano does go (which I think he will, I even hope he does TBH) then Lucas could very ably play alongside Gerrard, or een Aquilani if we really ask Gerrard to sit in (which he definately could, and probably will do before too much longer).

One signing can change the whole complexion of the way the team sets up. Which one of those front sixes above do you reckon Arsenal would rather play against in game one? To me it's an absolute no brainer.

I agree (mostly) with what you said. I too, am excited to see how Cole changes the balance of our team. Basically the arrival of Cole means that Gerrard should be play CM and we are free of the Masch/Lucas partnership. I think that we will be a much better team with Gerrard playing box to box, and supporting our attack by arriving late.

                Reina

           Carra    Agger
Johnson                   Left-back

          Gerrard Masch

                  Cole
   Kuyt                     Jovanovic
                 Torres

The thing that excites me is that this formation can easily change to a 4-4-2 by Cole taking over either wing and pushing either Kuyt or Jovanovic to play as a striker. This sort of play will get the best out of Kuyt/Jovanovic.

In fact, this is the first time for as long as I care to remember that we have no players playing out of position.

Balance!

this is the difference with Roy, he's sorting it out and when he has information he addresses the fans to keep us in the picture - feking love him for that!

He must have something to tell so he's doing an interview and within the next hour we'll all know where we stand - top man.

In and Out wrote:I personally (MY OPINION) would have very much doubted the move had our previous manager have been here. Marquee players were not Rafa's style which his teams have been liken to 'a well oiled' machine, grinding our opponents down. You only have to look at the personel and tactics used by him to see that a player like J.Cole (IN MY OPINION) would have been quite low down on his shopping list. He may have made an inquiry but that doesn't mean J.Cole would have signed, after all the player himself said he was looking for a manager who would 'love him'. Our previous manager was not that man, definately not, it seemed he blew hot and cold depending on the weather and some players I don't think could really take to him, I doubt J.Cole could have either.

I am so happy that he has moved on and a fresh start beckons on the football field even if it doesn't in the boardroom, because the poor performances and results made our club situation feel a whole lot worse than necessary and added to the anger. Now we have a fresh face, who's been around the block a few times, a man who plays his cards closley to his chest when speaking of transfers and a man that the players can relate to. The football we change (for the better over time) and a signing like Cole signifys a better approach ahead in the future concerning our football.

I know a ball hasn't been kicked (and I already prefer our new manager, quite the opposite to the many on here who have/had written him off before that bladder of air had been kicked), I know there will be blips but I have every confidence that Roy and his reds will soon make last seasons dismal showing a distant memory.

Sorry if this post doesn't really belong in here but it is not easy to see where I can put a 'positive' post on these boards without it flaming something; in the exciting moments of signing Cole I couldn't think of a better place to post this.

100% agree, good post.

well said.

I got a text yesterday saying Cole has the No 7 shirt.  Can anyone confirm
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

hasn't had his medical yet, so i doubt it's been 'officially' released. Sky sports had an article on him as liverpools new no. 7. - but apparently he was wearing 10 in training... so i dont know, sorry!

In order to confuse the issue more, who will get number 10?
