So our best cb is also our first choice left back ?! That's a great situation to be in

Might have been ok if we had got that Danny Wilson. He could have come straight into the 1st team along side Carra. Now the LB position will probably be a priority.

Do you know the sad thing for me in all of this is Insuas name was on the team sheet to play in last night match , to be told then a fee had been agreed , sad really ,

And yes Danny done ok for a couple of games in that position but there is no way on earth i wanna see him plaing there permantly , he has to be back in the center , simple
HE WHO BETRAYS WILL ALWAYS WALK ALONE

Insua may go on and do alright but I doubt his value to anyone will increase above what weve just been paid for him. We let Riise go far too early thats for sure and weve not found one better since he was moved on.I wont even get started on that lad Dossena!  :no

No doubt about it. Our last best LB was Riise and we sold him.

I am talking about agger. He finished the season playing as a left back...and he was way way way better than Insua ever was.

That would be fine if we had good CB's to replace agger in that position. We dont.

That's very true,

A back four consisting of

  Johnson        Carra               Skyrtl          Agger

  I like it :)

Gook luck Insua btw

i really don't think we're going to start the season without a left back and i imagine we will sign one very soon. whether its the wigan bloke or someone else i think we can almost certainly guarantee that it will be a player who is better than insua. he was ok and did a decent job for us in a difficult season but a lack of attributes that were never going to improve with age meant he would never reach the level we need. only man city had a worse left back than us in amongst the teams battling for CL places last season.

I like Insua but thought he didn't progress as much as hoped last season, though to be fair many under performed.

The Mail On Sunday had an article yesterday where they said without Aurelio and Insua that would only leave us with Dossena! In fact it leaves us with no-one other than perhaps Agger and young Robinson.

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that a new left-back is among his transfer priorities this summer, with Emiliano Insua seemingly on the verge of joining Fiorentina.

Fabio Aurelio was also released during the close-season, leaving the Reds without a recognised left-back.

Hodgson though will be working hard to remedy that deficiency in the coming weeks.

"We are short [in that position] and that is going to be one of the priorities. We need to find a replacement for Emiliano and Fabio. That is one job we will have to do," he said, according to his club's official website.

"As far as we understand, the deal [for Insua] has been completed between the clubs and his agent is sorting out personal terms. Maybe it was the right time for him to move on."

There have also been question-marks concerning the future of Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano, a player with whom Hodgson was finding it difficult to communicate last week.

Now though, the manager insists that making direct contact is not essential given the stage of the year we're at.

"He doesn't need to make contact with me. I've made contact with him telling him I'm looking forward to seeing him in training when he returns from his holiday, but I did make the point in the voicemail that I didn't expect him to contact me," Hodgson added.

"I just wanted him to know that I had been in touch and that I was thinking of him. I didn't ask him to call me back. I don't have a lot to say to him, to be honest, other than 'Welcome back'."

Meanwhile, one player who has impressed Hodgson during the Reds' pre-season training camp in Switzerland is Tom Ince, the 17-year-old son of former England, Manchester United and Liverpool midfielder Paul Ince, whom Hodgson coached at Inter.

The young midfielder has been training with the first-team and Hodgson is mulling over whether to use the teenager in some forthcoming friendlies.

"I remember Thomas back in 1995, as a small boy running around, kicking balls in his dad's apartment. He made sure Paul didn't get too much peace after training," the manager added.

"He probably did his best to make sure Paul stayed fit! But I have been impressed with him.

"He is a talented young man; in an ideal world, you wouldn't be thrusting him into matches of this calibre but, who knows? It might be very good for him."

Why open up with this? The rest of your post is fair enough, it's reasonable to assume Insua will improve as he's only 21, but equally regardless of how old he is, he was our first choice left back. If we sell him and get somebody in who's better (admittedly an if) then it's normal to assume the team will improve.

I actually think the kid is better than most on here give him credit for, but 5 mill is in my opinion good money for him. As for who sanctioned it, well almost certainly the previous manager will have been heavily involved in the early stages of the negotiations before he left. I've no doubt that if the offer had been made to buy Insua for 5 million quid while he was still at the club, he'd have taken it in a heartbeat. Much the same as he was involved in the Benayoun sale, and fair play to him that was a good deal too.

I think quite of few of "Llando the clown" so-called thickos were also expecting great things from Lucas when he was 21 and let's face it he is a Brazilian international!

Insua is very average at best. If he is as good or has the potential suggested then why didn't one of the top teams come after him?

Barcelona signed Adriano the Brazilian fullback from Sevilla for around 7mill... The guy is top class going forward.. he can play Leftback, Righback, Left winger, Right Winger... Very good signing and if anything just goes on to show that for such sort of money you can sign a good player whos much better than Insua ever will be...  Just need to get it right...

I think Insua will go on to be a solid player but he lacked the pace needed for the premiership, so good luck to him.
