Fauxy wrote:Liverpool are being linked with a move for Standard Liege captain Steven Defour, according to several reports in the Belgian press.

The versatile midfielder is thought to be on the verge of leaving the Belgian outfit, despite recently extending his contract with the club.

Defour, who was out injured for much of last season but is still highly-rated in European football circles, is expected to command a fee of around £10 million (€12m).

The player has been linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United as well as the Reds.

Should he move to Anfield he will link up with his former team-mate in Belgium, Milan Jovanovic, who joined the Reds this month.

Possible replacement being lined up for Mascherano? Very good player.

excellent player. different to mascherano but very good player nonetheless. would be made up if we got him. far better than screech who went to the bitters.

If Masherano has a release/escape clause in his contract (why does his agent claim he doesn't know what it is  ) then we may end up getting striped on the fee. Quite often the player and his agent negotiate a low get out price so as to maximise their future earning potential. The previous manager will know the trigger point as well (I still can't believe his agent reckons he doesn't know what it is :D ) so I wouldn't be expecting too much more than that. I've no idea what it is, but it would be no surprise at all if it were around what we paid for him and some way short of 30 million. I think he's worth a similar price if not more than Yaya Toure, but we may not get that.

Mick in todays current financial climate I dont know who is able to pay big money or who is worth big money.

Nando to Chavski for 50 million, SG to RM for 30m, Masher to Barça for 30m.... its all paper talk, in reality clubs are already way over leveraged and the chequebooks are in teh top drawer gathering dust.  Citech and Chavski have the potential to be the exceptions but they´ll still drop their prices to reflect the market.

I wouldnt be surprised if all 3 are still at anfield next season without clubs even making an offer.

True mate. I do though have a horrible feeling that given our situation, if we do end up losing a player or two it might be for considerably less than we are all expecting. We might see Torres as worth at least 60 million quid (I do), but the money men will see 30 million quid plus not having to pay up 24 million for the last 4 years of his contract as a mouth watering offer.

I would welcome the signing of Steven Defour although I don't really see him in the 'spoiler' mould that Mascherano.

We have to be looking at £25m MINIMUM for Mascherano given that Toure was sold for around that amount.

If we were to bring in Defour for £10m that would leave some cash for Steven Ireland and Scott Parker :) We'd have plenty options in MF anyway :D

Better not sign Defour, weren't the bitters after him? Point being they get even more bitter any time we're seen as 'poaching' players they were interested in! :D

I wouldn't mind any or all of the three players you mention, problem is getting them for a fair price. Like Barry for £18m, sometimes players are priced above and beyond their worth. FWIW

Scott Parker is 29 (DOB 13/10/80)
Steven Defour is 22 (DOB 15/04/88)
Stephen Ireland is 23 (DOB 22/08/86)

I would be reluctant to pay more than £7m for Parker, good player that he is he'll be 30 a few months into next season. The other two are young and more importantly established. I think we're more likely to get Defour of de three, but wasn't the fee something like £15m+ when the bitters were linked?! Just tried to find a price with that past link, I hope the link with a move to us for £8.5m is correct as I'd sell Mascherano for £25m+ (to Inter with player in p/ex perhaps), buy Defour and have money left to spend on another good player.

This is an interesting piece with some interesting comments after :

Roy Hodgson admits he has yet to speak to Javier Mascherano to clarify the midfielder's future.

The Argentina captain - who according to the media is the subject of interest from clubs in Spain and Italy - is currently on holiday after helping his country to the World Cup quarter-finals.

Hodgson has now chatted to all of his senior stars after taking over from Rafael Benitez - with one exception.

"I have tried to contact Javier," Hodgson told reporters at the Swiss training camp today.

"I have left him voice messages and sent him texts but had no reply. To be fair to him, that's not unusual because he's had a tough World Cup and I believe he's gone back to Argentina.

"It's not always easy to get in touch with people. I have tried to reach him to make clear I am happy to talk with him at his convenience."

is it me or is Mascherano acting like he doesn't give a f*ck anymore?

If I ignored by boss like that I'd get the royal order of the boot, and rightly so. Business is business.  Shirley LFC have been in touch via his pl*nker agent?

quite funny actually because I read somewhere the other day that he is meant to be quoted as saying "I would love to team up with Benitez again and join a club of such history and prestige as Inter Milan"

Yeah like Liverpool has no history or prestige.

Love him as a player but he quite clearly doesnt want to be here.
Sell him, but only on our terms.
If not make him stay another season. None of this being held to ransom.
30 million and he can go to Inter or wherever to be honest.

Either he signs a contract before the transfer window is out or we get rid.  If by next summer he hasn't signed a new deal, his value will have likely halved and that's far too big a risk to take.
