watched Shutter Island the other night

scared the other half to death (if you like a bit of a mystery in your thrillers then this was a very good film)

some scenes a bit too disturbing but nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed it, Dicaprio puts in a really solid performance again.

I just watched 'Let the right one in'.

Have to say I was bitterly dissapointed with this after the 'hype' and good reviews it got. It was a slow and tedious movie where the cinematography was panned on everyday things like the environment for eg. a tree covered in snow for too long, with silences. With that the movie had no atmosphere and was quite predictable. Sweden's 'younger' version of New Moon.

What's with all these gay vampire films? Seen the advert for that new Twilight which was described as "the movie event the world has been waiting for"? I don't get it. Sh*te like Twilight shouldn't even be considered a vampire film at all, and I've not even seen it yet, nor do I have any desire to do so. Couple of pretty boys and girls with fangs. Ohhh, scary! I watched Salems Lot again the other week, and while it was dated in parts and often cheesy at times, that vampire is one scary looking b@stard - which is based off the original Nosferatu vampire - and had some real creepy scenes in it. Give me another one of those or the vampires from 30 Days of Night instead of these gay new age teen horrors. Have a quick comparison to see what I mean:

Oh, and I watched a somewhat interesting, yet silly show the other night called Splice. It reminded me of some other film and I can't recall which, but anyway, it's a tale of mad scientist messing about with things they shouldb't be by mixing DNA from various species with another to create a kind of abomination. It's interesting enough at the start, but then it gets a bit nuts about half way through when said abomination and mad scientist decide to get it on on the floor of a barn. Who writes this sh*t, I wonder.

Sick to death of all these girly vampire flicks going around. My girlfriend loves 'True Blood'. I personally think it's a load of bollox meself.

All this vampire fucking is just lame. They're dead, they can't fuck and the angsty goth vampire rubbish too...can't stand it. She has no time for 'Twilight' though. Thank Christ.

Give me the vamps in '30 days of Night' any day. Nobody wants to fuck them. Probably the best vampire film in 30 years.

Good flick that, wonder if sequel will be anything worthwhile

My recommendation for an awesome alternate cult vampire movie is 1987 "Near Dark" movie featuring many of the cast of Aliens. Sadly they dont make vamps like them anymore

The bit when the vampire floats up to the boys window "Mark,Mark let me in Mark...I'm your friend" freaked the fuc'k outta me when I was younger...never slept proper for weeks after that movie!....Will always be a classic!

If you watch that scene again, it gets it's creepy effect by actually being shot backwards and then played in reverse so the smoke looks like it's drifting unnaturally out from the room and out the window as the boy floats into the room from the outside. Very surreal looking.

Just seems all the talent in making films like that is gone because it's being replaced by over the top CGI. The 80's still had the best use of special effects in horrors IMO. All the craft and artistry has gone out the window. Films like Day of the Dead and The Thing had absolutely amazing use of animatronics and are still the best I've seen because they look real.

Speaking of The Thing, a prequel is being made and I really hope the decide to go with the special effects techniques used in the original, because if they go the CGI route, I think they'll make a balls up of it.

Just a couple of examples of what I'm talking about. The scene in Alien where the alien bursts through John Hurt's chest was so effective because everything that was happening to the actors was actually a bit of a surprise and a shock because they weren't expecting it to happen. Ridley Scott never told them that the blood was going to burst from his chest, so the reaction you see is real. Real special effects on screen gets a better performance from the actors.

Whenever I was about 8 years old, the old zombie flicks fascinated me because they scared the sh*te out of me. Doesn't make sense, I know. Whenever I put the VHS of Day of the Dead into the old top loader for the first time and seen this thing walk up to the camera, I almost sh*t myself. Classic special effects that still work to this day. Makes me wonder why no more zombie films use these techniques.

Cos the likes of Rob Bottin (The Thing) and Tom Savini (Day of the Dead) have moved in different directions. In fact Savini isn't doing any effects work any more.

As for zombie films, there is a new series coming out based on 'The Walking Dead' graphic novels Walking Dead. Some of the zombies in that look great.

The guy responsible for the effects crew on this is Greg Nicotero. He cut his teeth with Savini on 'Day of the Dead'. "Dr. Tounge" was one of his creations.
