Liverpool Football Club - Games

Whatever you think of Fat Sam, 3.55 into this vid he nails exactly why we've lost to teams in the lower half of the table.

Unless we change our style with the squad we have, we will continue to lose out to teams who instead of playing "pretty" football will set up a massed defence and mug us with a long ball.

Spurs use a very similar system to us (with fullbacks that push on) yet have the best defence in the league.
IMO our problems are down to personnel, not tactics.

You could be right Yakka, not sure if Spurs (don't watch them) fullbacks push forward simultaneously (?)

For Bentekes first goal it looked like they had more players in the box than we did !

In terms of personnel at CB we deffo need some pace and defensive awareness.

Walker and Rose probably play further up the pitch than Clyne and Milner mate but Spurs have 2 quick-ish CB's in Alderweired and Vertongen and 2 physically imposing DM's in Wanyama and Dier who do a good job of screening their defence.
That's not to say Spurs are the finished article, we have played them off the park twice this season (three times if you include the league cup) but they are a good theoretical example of how this system can work defensively.

Spurs look better coached defensively, just like chelsea. This is a chelsea team who play Azpilicueta, a fullback, at centre back, Luiz and Cahil. I really don't think there is much between that lot and Matip and Lovren(although granted he was awful on the weekend but has generally done well this season). Similarly, don't think anyone will be picking Moses over Clyne. Milner isn't a fullback but has done a job there but yes Alonso is a better LB/LWB .

What spurs and chelsea do have over us is real powerhouse, dynamic central midfielders. Kante/Matic and Wanyama/Dembele offer a real presence in there and get though a lot of defensive work and fill in where needed. Those combinations are full of stamina, energy, dynamism and the dedicated defensive midfielders i.e Kante and Wanyama provide excellent cover for the defense.

The only real defensive midfielder we have is Lucas, who has been fading for years now. None of Hendo, Can or Wijnaldum can do the defensive job that Kante and Wanyama (for £11m is looking a great bit of business) do for their teams. Not surprised we have been linked with Naby Keita who is in that mould because we do need a proper presence in there imo
