Yes but i think its important that we should keep doing this even when results don't go are way so that we can directly compare this season and last season.

points comparing is pointless, teams are not exactly the same as last year so comparing is silly

the 8 games we have had this season.......7 of them should have been win-able, chelsea apart

any game vs chelseas is always hard so a draw vs them is expected, apart from that we have had a pretty easy start

I would have thought that was precisely the point of comparing points. I think its good to compare our points to the same stages and against the same opposition as last year. It tells us quite accurately if we are progressing as a team after all the summer signings and the signings other teams have made.

Or are we just going to do this when the team is doing well?

Yeah sorry about that Statto, forgot about it to be honest mate.

Updated to include upto Arsenal game.

Still 6 points beter off than this stage last season, which is two wins. We finished 21 points off the winners last season, so need to find another 5 wins (better then last season) to get in there.

We were top of the league unbeaten, now we're sixth and unbeaten so that surely counts as a downhill trajectory.....................

So, maths say that if we can be 9 points better in 15 games, then we can be 22 or 23 better in 38, which means that if we continue this way, we'll be bridging the gap we had yesteryear to challegenge for the title.

And all that in spite rotation. Not bad.

Here's the FULL top four comparison based on results this season against corresponding fixtures last season. Obviously this excludes games against brum, slumberland and Derby

2007/8

Arsenal P12 W9 D3 L0 F23 A9 PTS 30
Man Utd P13 W8 D3 L2 F23 A7 PTS 27
Chelsea P13 W7 D4 L2 F17 A7 PTS 25
Liverpool P11 W6 D5 L0 F18 A6 PTS 23

2006/7

Arsenal P12 W8 D2 L2 F24 A14 PTS 26
Man Utd P13 W9 D2 L2 F32 A13 PTS 29
Chelsea P13 W7 D4 L2 F21 A12 PTS 25
Liverpool P11 W6 D1 L4 F22 A9 PTS 19

So both Liverpool and Arsenal are four points better off, the mancs are only two points worse off and Chelsea the same. Yet to hear some talk you'd think Arsenal had already won the league. And don't forget Arsenal and Liverpool finished level on points last season, way behind the mancs

I intend keeping my spreadsheet updated every now and then, it's interesting to compare results. We don't get much credit for beating Bolton 4-0 or Derby 6-0, but lets see how others from last season's top five did against them

LIV 4-0 BOL
ARS 2-0 BOL
BOL 0-1 CHE
TOT 1-1 BOL
BOL 1-0 MNU

So the mancs are the only side of last season's top five to lose to Bolton.......................... The others managed only to just about beat them or draw

LIV 6-0 DER
ARS 5-0 DER
DER 0-2 CHE
TOT 4-0 DER
MNU vs DER (08/12/07)

Derby have the dubious privelege of visiting old trafford next up, we'll see if they get more than six. West Ham's 5-0 win at 'Pride' Park is probably the most emphatic thumping handed out to Derby this season

No real change after last nights results, Arsenal drew at SJP last season 0-0. So in the course of 13 games they've picked up four more points than last season - wow!

But I am relieved they didn't win, nine points would be a lot psychologically even with a game in hand, and with the mancs to come very very soon on what is probably our most important week of the season so far

Updated to include the last two results (if you can call them results) against Readign and United.

Overall we are on 30 this season, this is only 3 up on the 27 points against the same teams last season. With almost everyone played we do need to see an improvement - most importantly against the three teams in the league.

Crucially we are now only 5 points better off as at the same stage of the 2006-07 season. This 5 points, if we assume the same 5 point "swing in the second half of the season will only put us to within 11 points of the lead.

This is obviously not going to win us the league, (although many think we wont now anyway) so the improved results over the rest of the big four will be the deciding factor in wether or not we are goign to have any chance.

3 points off the MAncs total, and three on ours when coupled with the 10 point swing (see above) will mean we are two wins from top spot all things being equal. Thats what I had hoped for this season.
