It is all about opinions and personally I think you are giving our Stewie more credit than he deserves. Gerrard, Carragher, Suarez, Henderson, Coutinho and Sturridge are the key reasons why we have improved since the turn of the year. Downing has played a part but it has been minimal compared to the other players I have mentioned. He has improved from a pathetically low base and that is all I will give him credit for. It doesn't impress me when the manager has to go as far as telling him he can fk off before he actually starts to make an effort and contribute.

better players than downing have been told to shift their @rse into gear or their out, ian rush for one.
im not saying downing has contributed as much as suarez, what i am saying is that downing has been a steady eddie, he`s not ripped the league to shreds but he hasnt been a liability either. there are area`s of our side that are costing us games and points like the center of our defence and the center of our midfield.
i just find it odd when people start ripping downing to shreds when he`s done nothing wrong, yes maybe in some peoples opinion he doesnt do enough but it`s not like he leaves the fullback exposed like suso was doing to wisdom, or it`s not as if he constantly gives the ball away like sterling was doing, i think he`s doing okay and imo `okay` doesnt warrant the type of stick he`s getting from some in here.

Sturridge was bought to score goals and he has certainly achieved that. Danny either displays stand out brilliance or utter dross. He doesn't seem to have any middle gears. Unfortunately by comparison Downing only has middle gears and took fifteen months to find any of them. As for Carra I think you'll find that he does a lot more than just defend. He is a leader and a motivator and that was missed when he wasn't in the team.

Yet his first job is too defend and that's been one of our main weaknesses this season - it's one of the most troublesome areas in the team.

Downing has also produced goals and assists since Jan as well as also having quiet games. Guess he should get the same "treatment" as both Carra and Sturridge this season.

But it appears that some still want to focus on last season.

You seem to be agreeing with me that he is average at best. I won't easily forget the utter sh.ite he played under Kenny and a few steady Eddie performances won't bring on a sudden case of amnesia.

Not sure about comparing a young 19 year old Rush with Downing's first fifteen months at Liverpool. Bloomin eck and you have a go at me for comparing Heighway and Downing. Suggest you read this as a memory jogger because I don't think Paisley ver told him that he could go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Rush

I think if I remember correctly Downing was part of the team that won our first trophy in 6 years ? As well as getting to another final

He was also a key part of a Liverpool team that broke an incredible number of league records for all the wrong reasons.

And he also wasn't the only one - with plenty other reasons for that season. But I'll focus on the positive outcome from that season - like winning a trophy and beating the top teams along the way ( with Downing in the team )

Lets not also forget this season isn't much better so maybe the problem is more than just one player.

The key difference is that the second half of last season was a disaster except for the cup runs. The same cannot be said of this season.

At the risk of being repetitive I just think that you are giving Downing considerably more credit than he deserves.

And the start of this season was a disaster with nothing to balance it.

What credit exactly do you think we are giving Downing ?

He has done a solid steady job for us since he was reintroduced into the team in Dec/Jan and since then the form of the team improved as a whole and Downing played a part in that - its not a big a part as say Suarez or Gerrard or Coutinho but its on par with players like Henderson , Sturridge and possibly Lucas.

That's it really - no one is going overboard nor overplaying his part.

You've actually managed to find a gear that I didn't think you had - REVERSE !!!

You claimed on a number of occasions that Downing's return to the team was a key reason for our improved goal scoring record. That in my opinion is giving him considerably more credit than he deserves.

No one has reversed anything ?

Take away the hysterical reaction when someone doesn't think Downing is "*****" or any other word and you will see the opinion about Downing hasn't changed or "reversed" as you suggest.

He has done well this season - been solid when needed.

When did I claim exactly that ?

That's you reading too much into what people are posting

I haven't said he was a "key reason" at all
