Stelios wants in... - ...but will we open the door?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Bolton forward Stelios Giannakopoulos admits he still harbours dreams of signing for Liverpool.

The Greek international was close to signing for The Reds last summer but talks between The Trotters and their Premiership rivals failed to reach a successful outcome.

Stelios then committed his future to The Reebok Stadium outfit but, despite penning a three-year-deal just last summer and Bolton emerging as challengers for UEFA Champions League qualification this season, the attacker insists he would relish a move to a bigger club.

"That's my dream. Not only to go to Liverpool but, in general, to go to a bigger team," Stelios told Greek daily Eleftheros Typos.

"Then I would say that I have reached the peak of my career. That's my vision and I am working very hard every week to make Liverpool or any big team chase my signature."

Despite admitting his preference to remain in Europe's higher profile leagues, Stelios claims a switch to former club Olympiakos could also appeal to him in the future.

"I would rather stay and finish my career abroad. But if I came back to Greece it would only be for Olympiakos," added Stelios.

The 31-year-old has been in impressive form again this season and scored his 12th goal of the campaign in Bolton's 4-3 defeat to Middlesbrough at The Riverside on Sunday.

I don't know if I want him, but it's nice to know we're wanted!

I don't think so. He's a good players who has had an amazing season but I think the chance has come and gone. Liverpool would probably have to pay more for him now because of the contract extention he signed. His age is also another factor that will go against a possible move.

I don't really see any stand out work from him down the right wing. It's his goals that appeal much more than anything. Not good enough.

He's a possibility in all honesty, I rate him of course not as highly as Joaquin, SWP & Jermaine Pennant but I still rate him as a good player. I suppose if we were to fail landing the three I mentioned above plus we failed to land Wayne Routledge or Chelsea bound Simao then I think I'd give him (Stellios) or Solano a shot. We need to sign a right midfielder desperately to increase our creativity in midfield and we need someone who can either score goals e.g Stellios or deliver a good cross e.g Pennant.

I'd use Stellios as a last resort, he's not someone I think we should make a priority objective but someone who should be short listed as a last ditch possibility if anything should go wrong on the right mid front.

I agree with oasis. He is not as good as Joaquin, SWP, Jermaine Pennant or even a couple of others we've been linked with but he is a good player and he does score. At £1m last summer, he would have been a good buy considering our right midfield options this season. But for next season i would much prefer to spend £10/12m on an amazing RW than £3m on stelios.

Last summer I'd have seen him as a good signing.  But now he's 31 and with signing the new contract there he'd cost more.  You're probably talking 3-5 million for a 31 year old, no thanks.

It's also worth noting that most of his damage is done from making runs into the box - like a Garcia or a Ljungberg - he doesn't take players on and he doesn't hit the box with too many crosses.

A good player, but not what we're looking for imo.

I won't bother if there would be a transfer fee. Heck, he's already 30+ of age, how long of a service can we get from him to guarentee a good return?

We trusted in the signing of Gary McAllister and look what he did for us in a short space of time? He was instrumental in that period of our success. A player's age has little do with it. Younger players would be nice but you have to mix experience with youth.

Lando, we could a lot better but knowing us we will mess around in the transfer market and then make a last ditch bid for a right sided player and I don't see why it shouldn't be Stellios.

You always need an experienced midielder. And after this season (with Didi Hamman maybe leaving) he could get his chance.

Weve don well in the past with an older player anyway. Look at Gary McCallister. I could be wrong of course and Rafa may look to replace Hamman with one of the youngsters coming up or simly buy another CM. However I dont think a CM is on his wishlist ahead of RM and ST
