RAFA CONFIRMS STELIOS INTEREST
Paul Eaton 24 August 2005
Rafael Benitez has this afternoon confirmed his interest in signing Bolton winger Stelios Giannakopoulos.
The Reds boss is hoping to bring the Greek international to Anfield before next week's transfer deadline as he looks to fill the right midfield berth in his team.

Benitez, who is also hoping to recruit a new central defender before the transfer window closes next Wednesday, has revealed he spoke to Bolton boss Sam Allardyce after last night's game at Anfield to see if a deal is possible.

He said: "Our chief executive Rick Parry is talking with their Chairman about the possibility of a deal.

"I also spoke to Sam Allardyce about the player last night because we need to know if he'd be available. At this moment Stelios is one possibility for us.

"We are working hard to strengthen the squad before the deadline."

Ahh well such is life as European Champions.

IMO he is a good squad player but nothing beyond that. He did impress me for bolton last season though. I can only see this being a short transfer as stelios is 30 and I don't see us offering him a 5 year deal.

Feck I know we are not Chelsea but FFS talk about bargain basement players, Crouch, stelios, Zenden, wheres all the money gone?
These players would have been brought in whether we won the CL or not, so whats happened to the money, around 30 million pound?
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Exactly we should have a lot more money to spend due to the champs league win last season, the money the board give for the summer anyway, the sale from baros and a number of other players and also the money from qualigying for the groups which rafa seaid has already been allocated for his transfer plans... and then we hear 1m stelios  ???  ??? Now unless we are signing an established world class centre back which i doubt then something seriously dont add up. However some of the money could be getting saved for january.

Rafa said he wants hungry players, not ones who've already made their mark.  He had no choice at Valencia, so my only worry is that we'll only achieve the standard they did, which was good for them but not for Liverpool.
At the end of the day, I trust Rafa for now.

On SSN before, I can't believe this, bolton have branded us unprofessional for saying we want stelios. They said

"I can't believe a premiership club we have so much respect for announces they want one of our players on a match day, it is totally unprofessional."

They also said that they won't accept a fee unless it is over £2 million.

I say we offer £2 million and a pound :D
