Stadium - Or the team

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby kenco » Fri Dec 17, 2004 4:25 pm

Do you think this is the right time for liverpool football club to be going ahead with the plans for a new stadium.Would we fill a sixty thousand seater stadium every week with the team we have at present, or do you think we should put off building untill we have a team that is challenging and winning trophys. with the money that as been put aside to build the stadium, being spent on the team to help us achieve our dream of being the top side at home and in europe once again ?

I'd say leave the money for the team. When we build a solid squad then we should make a new stadium.

Just as a point....if we wait for the team to improve, then go thru the various stages to buildin a new stadium, we could well be in decline again before its finished!! Public enquiries, public disagreements about the outcome of the public enquiries, dodgy contractors holdin out for more money to finish the job, and then concerns over the weight of the roof (a la wembley) would mean we'd be ten years away from a new ground!! :p  The team does need strengthenin, but if the ground is to become reality it has to happen sooner rather than later. Personally I like Anfield. Don't see any reason we should move, unless its to improve our status as one of the top teams in the world, only thing is we gotta get back there first.
The money from the takeover bids....is that destined for the team or the brickwork? And how come its gone so quiet lately?

Beside the Hillsborough Flame, I heard a Koppite mournin, "Why so many taken on that day?" Justice has never been done. But their memory we'll carry on. There'll be Glory Round The Fields Of Anfield Road

Like I said in another thread on this issue ,
"Ask Sunderland and Wolves supporters what their choice would be . Both clubs spent a fortune on a new stadium .
Look at them now :D

Until we are firmly established once again as major challengers for the championship title spending money on a new stadium is (to borrow a quote)
"Like putting lipstick on a pig "

I agree with woof woof, derby are another team with a class stadium and are stuck in the coca-cola:laugh:

Look at the gooners, they got there act together on the field, got proper kids coming through and then sorted the stadium out

The old Shankly line went something like "we want all our assets running around anfield in red shirts".Times have changed though and players are very risky assets to have. They can sit on fat contracts and leave for nothing after a few years. The new stadium with an extra 15 or 20 thousand seats has to be the priority, accompanied hopefully by some outside investment in players.

Understand your point greenred but I'll go with Shanks on this one . I'd rather be standing on the old kop watching the best team we can afford playing for titles
instead of sitting in a state of the art stadium wondering if we can  beat blackpool

There are 80 of us come down from Glasgow for each game. If we had a bigger Stadium, there could easily be another two coaches, because most games we have more fan's than tickets.
See you on Sunday for the Newcastle game, we will have some fun in the Lake District Services with the Toon army on the way down. The Geordies are good for the crack and a laugh.

I'd prefer the money to be spent on redeveloping the current stadium and team itself.

Here's a decent site about the stadium issue.

Arsenal have done both so why not us?

Also I don't think there is ever a good time to spend on bricks and mortar rather than players but we must bite the bullet some time but there again now is not the right time 'till we have a settled team that is winning.

One problem with that argument..... WE ARE A MUCH BIGGER CLUB THAN THEM!!!

The long term says it is inevitable. So better now than later, or it will get worse before it gets better. Also I think there are plenty of potential season ticket holders on waiting list. The stadium will get filled.
