Did most scousers still feel this way bout him when he went to sampdoria after winning the european cup or were they burning shirts with his name on them like we saw outside anfield a few weeks ago??

I wasn't born at the time so thats why i'm asking!

Harry is desperate to keep 'great lad' Crouch - but can Saints resist an £8m bid?
By Dave Smith 19-July-05

Now that Chelsea have snapped up Shaun Wright-Phillips, Peter Crouch has become the hottest English property in town - with Charlton and Middlesbrough joining Liverpool and others in the race for the big man's signature.

It's looking increasingly impossible for Southampton to hang on to the England striker, although Harry Redknapp continues to insist that the South Coast club will not settle for anything less than £8m for the gangly hit man.

Sainst have already turned down two bids from Liverpool - of £6m and £6.5m - and one from West Ham, while Manchester City are also said to be keen. And Stuart Pearce has now got a few quid to spend following the £21m sale of Wright-Phillips.

But Saints boss Redknapp insisted he was still keen to hold on to Crouch, saying: "Peter has been as good as gold. He is training hard and not letting things affect him. Obviously, I want to keep him but it is not my decision, it will be a boardroom decision in the end."

It would seem that Liverpool would be Crouch's favoured destination, so now it's time for the Reds to stump up or shut up. "If they want him they have got to pay the money," said Redknapp. "They said they wanted to go on tour with him so they need to buy him this week or forget all about him. Then we can all get on with our lives."

He added: "If we sold him I'm sure I wouldn't see all of it but although I would be able to bring in two or three players I would rather have Crouchy."

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has confirmed his interest by saying: "Crouch is a player I like and I would hope that the final talking will be over as soon as possible. I would like to see him working with us, at this stage of our season you want players sooner rather than later."

As Redknapp has said, Crouch has done well to put all the speculation surrounding his future to the back of his mind, and concentrate on the job at hand - getting fit for the new season and get back amongst the goals, having scored 16 in the Premiership next season.

After Crouch had netted a brace in a pre-season win over Kilmarnock, Redknapp said: "Peter took his goals well and he's shown a good attitude despite all the stuff with Liverpool. I'm hoping the chairman will be strong because we're trying to keep our best players.

"It must be difficult for him, Liverpool are playing in the Champions League and it's not easy for the boy. West Ham and Liverpool have both bid £6m and we don't want to lose him. I hope Liverpool don't come in with another bid but you just don't know.

"He's important to us and we need to keep him. I've had 11 players leave already and they were decent players who would get in my team. Kevin Phillips and Henri Camara have gone and if I lose Peter I will have lost my three front strikers from last year.

"But he's a great lad, he knows why he's here and he's got to do well here if he wants to get into the World Cup squad next year."
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Dirk kuyt, the Dutch striker reportedly interesting Rafa Benitez, has been named as captain of his present club, Feyenoord.

The decision will inevitably cause concern to Reds fans though, many of whom were hoping the prolific striker would choose Anfield as his next home. But Kuyt said he was delighted his new found role.

"I found it important to know how the team would stand against the decision. After all the intention is that the leadership within the squad won't come to rest on the shoulders of one man, but that we do it together. That's why I first thought about it, before I accepted the offer," he told the club website.

He added, "I'm 24-years-old. That’s a pretty young age to be captain of Feyenoord. But I think that I could be a good captain. The last two seasons I have played all the games for Feyenoord. This maybe comes at the right moment.''

And Erwin Koeman, Feyenoord boss, said it was an easy decision to make.

''Dirk is a lad who is a leader within the team. Besides he is popular with his team-mates, crowd and press. It was a logical choice to make him captain," he told the club website.
