The thing is ciggy, i dont hate Rafa or love Roy.

You clearly cant get over Rafa going and wont back Roy that's the difference.

You have ignored my questions about the state of our squad and made excuses about the owners and Zara has about what united and Chelsea have spent.
While i agree we cant compete with what others spend, does that mean that we shouldnt get the best out of what we have ?
Like i have said previously 95% of football clubs are on a tight budget and cant just but who they want. Do they all go backwards ?
Or do some managers make the most of what they have got ?
I am in agreement about Hodgson at this moment in time he is struggling big time and we are playing terribly.
I am concerned.
I hope he changes tactics and turns it around but if he doesnt then he needs moving on.
That's not me being OTT, all i care about is what;s best for the club.

Roy coming in might not have been the right move, i will agree with that. But cross my fingers that he proves everyone wrong.

You know what Ben, the reason I mention the other 'big' clubs, is beacsue we are a 'big' club and comparatively, with the excpetion of Torres (all be it through a bank loan) we have not spent close on what they have on individual players, to strengthen the lot of the team.

So on the budget available (however available) the current squad is good enough to be in the top 4-6 and is far superior to the one that was left to Rafa in 2005.

The question of whether we were right to 'mutually consent' to his departure ... he was NOT SACKED, is what we are being asked and my contention is that if he were in charge today, we would not be bottom 3 and looking disorganised and out of sorts, even more worringly de-motivated.

I read somewhere "they look all over the houses on the pitch and off it" - you'd never get that with a Rafa-led team.

My thoughts are that whilst the vast sum of £221m (dawson quoted) sounds impressive, it ain't when you think of the period over which it was spent, in comparison to the other 'big' clubs. While the others spend 25m+ on the class players.. we could and can not compete, so we went and go for the next best, and next next best still.

I also ask the question again - who would you have bought with the money that was available.. for the market it had purchasing power for?

Can any off us really say that the strength of our purchasing power is not at the heart of why we are in this position.. and therefore buying players is more of a gambe, mistakes more likely, and the edge to be the best lost?  are we not in essence, along-side the other wheeler dealer clubs, for whom mid-table mediocrity and survival in the top flight remains the ambition !

The difference is our heritage and traditon dictates our ambition remains to be the best, but we are loitering in markets where we are more vulnerable to being the most 'ordinary' of ordinary !

Isn't it interesting... we are on the verge of the biggest judgement about our club and there is a discussion on here 'still' about what Benitez did.

Given the frustrating antics of the current 'custodians' .. can people honestly not imagine what it must be like to work with these- when even someone like Broughton (upright and proper - massive reputation) has had to come out 'guns blazing' in 'public' (very unlike the Liverpool way - probably not 'his' way either) because of the lies and deceit by these 'custodians'..

I fully accept Rafa had to go.. because he's own sanity had been tested by these, frustrating his efforts and making him sell to buy etc, is that how we want our great club to operate.. well that's how it has been.

Roy Hodgson was appointed by these 'custodians', again a mesure of their class and 'ambition' for the club.. so I don't blame Roy, what he thought was the chance of a life-time and lets face it, any owner with an ounce of 'ambition' would not have appointed him, so lets not delude our selves, that the boardroom debacles and financial constraints did not affect Benitez,   that for every £25m + player that Man Utd and Chelsea bought and strenghthened their hands, we got 'what we got' for what we could afford to 'raise' ..

That's the current market for club's like us, but with the financial clout unlike ours... £80m Ronaldo, £30m Alonso, £25m Masch, £40m Villa, £25m D Silva, £30m Tevez......

Look at the anger and the strength of Broughton's attack on these two.. taking control of the website, issuing proceedings, giving interviews putting the record straight and clealry saying to the fans.. these are impossible to work for, incapable of doing the right thing and are the worst thing for this club.

This form a man whose reputation and demeanour dictates it's the last thing he would normally do - but are these 'normal times' at Liverpool FC  NO NO NO

They are NOT playing for Roy... and as much as I have supported him 'cos' he is the Liverpool Manager... I feared the job was too big for him.

the team didnt wanna play for Rafa last season, some say some would have left. Roy needs to sort himself out, but this thread is if it was right to sack Rafa, and it was... massively right, and thats what is splitting the fans right down the centre

Did Rafa have time and money to shape it as he wanted ?

(disclaimer) i am not saying he had unlimted funds. Just that he has had plenty of money to buy and sell players.
To build a squad how he wants it.

He for me in the last 18 months failed miserably.

The squad is better than what he inherited and better than Roys ever had to work with its not excuses.

He spent 3.5 million a season and has had to sell to buy since them b@stards arrived.

One of the worst scouts and money manager one could find. The Farce of Keane and Aqua were the toppin on the cake ,let alone Lucas and Babel - Releasing the likes of Hyppia and Crouch and Bellami and Even Sissoko. The man had eye for Talent no doubt. The man is a cup type manager ,give him one game to prepare for he is almost a match to no one ,give him a year to plan and a squad to build he is a total failure.

Bring him back so we can kick him out again...I would fire him just for his post game interviews.

He did buy well. Our squad had more players in the world cup than any other side. We've international standard players who get picked for their countries on a regular basis in almost every position. When the team was firing, I rememember practically everyone on this board was in agreement that the first 11 was as good as anything else out there, but we were just a few lacking in a bit of depth for the bench. So what's changed now? All of a sudden we've gone from having a first team full of quality, to a p*ss poor team that was mishandled by the previous manager because he bought poorly? Fact is, when players like Mascherano leave and you replace with players like Poulson, send a 17 milllion pounds worth midfielder out on loan, and then bemoan that we've not got enough quality in our middle or aren't creating goal chances is poor handling of squad resources. What was the point in buying a player like Mereiles and playing him out wide right in the midfield when you could keep the money and Aquilani and buy a secondary striker. Something that Rafa failed to do and something that it was obvious that we needed? That blows any of Rafa's mistakes in the transfer window clean out of the water for stupidity IMO.
