Then those away trips to Bolton, Blackburn, Stoke, Everton, Birmingham and Sunderland etc could leave us a little vulnrable to the 'bully' tactic these boys use. Arsenal would be a prime example, for all the sexy football they've played, they don't like it up em and have been bullyed many-er time off the park by said teams. You need IMO a 'hardman' in midfield and I don't think Gerrard needs the burden of that soley on his shoulders when he is able to accomplish so much more up top.

Definitely agree with that.  Stevie's got other talents that we need him focusing on rather than sticking him with the role of destroyer.

Worked a treat this season just gone.........................

For all the 'steel' we had no bite where it matters, up front
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

No argument there but I think the concern is that we swing the pendulum too far the other way if Masch goes.  I don't think we necessarily need to buy a Makele-esque sitter but we need a CM who puts himself about a bit to make sure we're winning the midfield battles.  Especially if we're fielding the likes of Aquilani or Joe Coe.

Not only that but Roy might not play with two "sitters" if he goes four accross the park he'll need someone in the middle who'll be able to put himself about abit.

Lucas doesn't cut it for me personally but if we lined up a midfield four of: Kuyt Gerrard Lucas Jovanovic, that will in all honesty probably be better than Kuyt Gerrard Aquilani Jovanovic; for me that's too lightweight in the middle.

I'd much prefer this:  Kuyt Gerrard Mash Jovanovic. If Roy were to opt playing four accross the park and with Cole central behind Torres.
Football is a relatively simple game and Roy knows it ;)

Lets do a middle four of Kuyt on the right, the new bloke on the left, Gerrard holding and Aquilani poncing about just ahead of him. Then Joey Cole playing off of Torres. We can bomb Johnson up and down on the right, tell Figeroa to get flying down the left, tell the Greek to get himself up for set pieces, and leave Carra back to cover, with Pepe of course, unless we're losing and there's not long to go, if we are then we should really go for it properly.

Lets 'Ave it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :buttrock

After the way we have been managed for the past decade I'm not ready to come out of the proverbial closet and go all cavalier just yet. It'd be like the French coming out fighting and standing up against ze Germans for their country during WWII, and it would seem really weird.

bigmick wrote:I think IAO makes a good point about Mcmahon and Souness, but they were different to your modern day sitter. Sounness used to score some great goals and make some great goals (don't know how many but my rose tinted memory has him down as scoring quite often, loved him as a player). McMahon wasn't quite as good, but he did get forward and support the attack much more than either of our axis duo.

I've come around to the idea that we should sit Gerrard in there. I think he'd be able to sit and protect no problem, but I ALSO think he'd be able to step up and create. None of this sitting your centre forward in deeper to stand on the creative midfielders toes if it was Gerrard, he'll be coming onto the ball 35 yards out and looking to shoot. I think he could do a really good job in there, I remember him having a stormer in there against Everton a few years back, and I think he would also contribute half a dozen league goals at least while he was doing it as well.

Absolutely loved Steve Mcmahon he  was one of the most underrated players to ever wear the Red shirt thought he was without doubt the hardest player of his generation and a significant part of what I claim was Liverpool's finest team ever
1988 was the  best season for me ..we simply blitzed teams with the most simple beautiful passing football I have ever been fortunate to see ... will always remember fondly Macca's 30 yarder against the Mancs and I think he scored his fair share that season
(Scouser as well ) brilliant player typifies the term "Midfield Enforcer" ..... I'm welling up here now Mick
