I somewhat feel for Curtis tbh about this whole armband thing. It's a stupid thing to get that angry about but on the other hand Jones is a local boy so wearing that armband must mean a lot to him and he might not have too many more chances to captain his club, which must be something he's always dreamt of as a kid, even if it's just for a friendly match.

I think you’re right. Had he worn the armband he would have saved it and put it in a special place in his house probably framing it. As you said, it would have meant a lot to him.

Having said that

Curtis Jones has captained Liverpool. On February 5, 2020, he wore the armband and became the club's youngest-ever captain at 19 years and 5 days old during an FA Cup fourth-round replay victory against Shrewsbury Town at Anfield

Put in a workplace context when a manager asks a junior manager to cover for him for 30 minutes and another thinks he should have done it... you'd call the lad in and tell him to grow up. That Jones did it on a world stage and made a prat of himself for all to see kinds sums the lad up. Not the brightest light on the Christmas tree.
