Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

maybe we should sign woodgate. he's putting the ball in the back of the net more regularly than our strikers at the moment.

So you want us to conced more goals then? :D

IMO Gallas would be ideal. He is strong, pacey and has a good work rate.

If Helguera is coming to Liverpool FC, I hope it doesn't turn out like  another Pellergrino situation.

helguera on a free is superb the boy is no pellegrino.  That allows us to get another cb in my opinion i would take anton ferdinand or Knight cos at times we look to foreigners when defenders who are british imo are always more up for it they dont have to be technically gifted just good at defending. Terry Carra are great defenders but not great on the ball. Everyone thought Rio was the rolls royce but for me he cruises too much and the foreign defenders do exactly the same! So Helguera (free) and Knight or Ferdinand gives us too good cb one holding midfielder (cos you never know with our injury luck) and more cash to go and blow on the new figo joaquin who imo is the best rm in world football far better than SWP.

I really think rafa will buy someone that is good and cheap like Gab Milito and Daniele Bonera ..... Upson is good but the brums will tag him with a higher price, as for Gallas and helguera, they are from the Chelshit and RM .... They won't sell to Liverpool because some issue in the past .

Your having a laugh aren't ya!? Helguera!? We already have the experience in Hyypia and Carragher. What we need now is a young CB with the ability to play at the highest level and who will eventually be a model of consistency for years to come.

When I think about it, I believe that Whitbread has been impressive when he has turned out for the first team. Perhaps we should use him when we want to rest either Carra or Sami and you might see him grow as a player by playing in high level games.

Just my opinion but I don't think Zak is upto it TBH. I may be wrong but based on what I've seen sofar, while he will undoubtedly make a good living playing football I would doubt it would be at the very highest level.

Zak, i have no doubt, is a gem, but he needs some more times before getting through the main squad

Exactly! That's what I'm saying! Give the lad some games and I'm sure he will do well and provide more consistency over the 90 mins that Traore could ever do. Let's look at OUR youngsters first before we go wasting our money.

agree wrighty, i always felt Zak would be a decent defender in the Liverpool side, im sure Rafa will give him a chance in the league cup and if he preforms really well he will play him in the premier league.

Can't make too many critical comments as i've never seen the lad play, however Rafa, Paco and the rest of the backroom staff have, and i'm sure that if he shows potential he'll be given his chance.

Just a note of caution though, if we cast our minds back to the Neil Mellor situation there was a huge clamour for him to be involved after doing so well in the ressies. When he did play, although he did quite well and scored a few goals (incl. the one against The Ar_se), i think the general concencus was that at the very highest level, which let's face it, is where we should be an in the latter stages of the Champs. league is what that is, he was not quite making the mark, he didn't reach the level required.

Now thats not to say he's a bad player just that in the final shake-up  against the best defenders he would struggle.
The same MAY apply for young Zak.

I've never seen him play so maybe someone who has can come back to me on that..........just a thought

In a young central defender of the highest quality I would look for pace, power, aggression and aerial ability while probably his awareness level and game reading ability would need work. If you look at the very best young central defenders in the Prem at the moment you generally see these are the sort of abilities and attributes they posess in abundance.
Probably the best two around IMHo are Senderos at Arsenal and the ever more promising Dawson at Spurs. They are both quick, good in the air and big strong young men who will only improve with age. Dawson also has that uncanny knack of getting on the end of dead-balls in the opposition penalty area and IMHO at 3 million represents a fantastic piece of business by Jol. Shame nobody at the club reads the forum as some of us on here were extolling his virtues long ago.
Whitbread looks to me like he reads it ok for a bloke his age. He looks to be lacking in pace somewhat which is a worry and his balance and strength in a physical battle look less than perfect to me. He's OK in the air and will make a decent footballer but people must remember here, it's not like the kid is 16 yrs old or anything. He will fill out and he will get better, but will he get good enough for a team which has ambitions of being Premiership winners? Not for me. The Mellor comparison is probably a little unfair because he is certainly better than that, but not quite upto it inmy view.

it will be interesting to see van den borre and kompany playing for anderlecht tomorrow. of course for our benefit i hope they both have nightmares, but they are both very highly rated.

bigmick, i said months ago that we should have signed daswon before spurs got him. taff was championing danny gabbidon for ages but the majority on here just laughed at him.

We can only wait and see. Don't knock a player until he has had a fair run in the side. Just to add as well, If it wasn't for Mellor (as well as others) we wouldn't have got to the semi's of the Champions League, never mind win it.
