Morientes keen on anfield move

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

From teamtalk.com

Fernando Morientes has revealed he would welcome a January transfer window switch to Liverpool after admitting he is frustrated at Real Madrid.

Spanish international Morientes fears the return to form of Michael Owen will push him down the pecking order at the Bernabeu - hastening a move to the club Owen left in August.

Reds manager Rafael Benitez is a confirmed admirer of Morientes, who reached last season's Champions League final while on loan at Monaco, and is keen to beef up his attack in the January transfer window.

With a Spaniard at the helm and a string of compatriots on the Anfield playing staff, Morientes believes he would fit in easily on Merseyside.

He said: "The return to form of Owen can be excellent for Real, but it is also a new problem for me.

"Liverpool could be a great option for January. I have always liked the Premier League and I know Rafa Benitez was interested in me when he was at Valencia."

The 28-year-old, whose goals helped Monaco knock Madrid and Chelsea out of last season's Champions League, added in the Daily Mirror: "My situation at Real Madrid is not pleasant. If things continue like this I will have to think about leaving. I am tired of sitting on the bench.

"Liverpool is a club where any player would be happy to play. It is a club with a history of having great supporters, a good coach and now Spanish players."

Benitez gave a clear hint yesterday that Morientes is on his shopping list. "When a player of the quality of Morientes talks about your club, then that has to be good," he said.

"I really can't say any more than the fact that Fernando is a very good player... but I guess I know what the headlines will be!"

I soooooooooooo hope he comes to Anfield, he has shown he is world class and a proven goal scorer, I just wonder how much he will cos as I think this would be the main factor in the deal.

The news is also on skysports. From what I`ve seen I would say that he`s got the ability to be on the right place to the right time, meaning that he scores a lot of "crappy goals".

Love to see this happen. But I fear Morientes is only using Liverpool in the politics that real are so famous for. By saying this he is trying to pressure the real manager to play him even though he’s not first team at the moment and if so do we really want someone with these attributes playing for us. Maybe im reading too much into this!

addicted norwegian, better "crappy goals" like Lee Chapman for Leeds in 1991-1992 season than fancy footwork but not being able to hit a barn door like El-Hadji "Disco Dude" Diouf!  :D

I read in the Sunday Times today that we can't get Morientes in January

It seems that under FIFA regulations he can only be registered with 2 national associations in one season. Apparently he was registered in France with Monaco, before going back to Real. This means that we could not get him until the end of the season at least.  :(

Fu3k, I want us to sign him sooooo bad as I think he's one of the best in Europe, especially the way he showed he can do it at other clubs (Monaco) not just Spain :(

Seems Monaco is his first choice according to BBC;

Striker Fernando Morientes has reiterated that he could leave Real Madrid in the January transfer window.
The 28-year-old Spain international has been linked with several Premiership clubs - and hinted at the weekend that he was interested in joining Liverpool.

But having spent last season on loan at Monaco, he now says that they would be his "first choice" for a move.

"We'll see in due course - but yes, there's always a possibility," he told French sports paper L'Equipe.

"I made a decision to stay one year at Real and things should go very wrong for me to change my mind.

"I know that the door is open at Monaco and I'd like to walk through that door again one day. If I had to leave Real once more, Monaco would be my first choice."

Morientes is yet to start a La Liga game this season.

My point exactly. We need a striker who can "sense a goal-scoring opportunity". Both Baros and Cissè use a lot of energy on long runs and "chasing the ball" and imo we could use a striker who`s main force is in the box
