With all of our conculation we still have 9 midfielders Gerard, Alonso, Garcia, Kewell, Nunez, Zenden, Gonzales, Sissoko and probably Figo!
accept the fact that players do not like siting on the bench especialy if the started for there team last season(Nunez and Kewell are an exeption), I think that Gerard's place in the first lineup is certain and also figo's place so it leave as 2 midfield positions for 7 players!!!!!!
If Rafa would change a lineup every game(I don't think he will do) so it can happen that players like Zenden or Garcia would sit on the bench for 2 or 3 games!!!!!!
After last season with all the injuries Rafa is securing the squad for injuries but if we wont have any injuries.........think about it.....we will have a lot of lineup problems

Every good team has depth at key positions and midfield is a key position.  Players have to realize that they won't play every game and with the length of the season plus all the cup games and exhibitions there is plenty of time for everyone to be used.  Over the course of a long season you are going to endure injuries and such so having depth is important if we want to finish top 4.  Look at other top squads in Europe and they all have stacked midfields.

injury cost us dearly last year with midfield carrying most serious to niggling injuries. rafa no,s this could happen again . also in past years rafa has built winning teams from a strong midfield. :)

I think our midfield looks great on paper if everyone plays to their full potential for the season ahead. If Figo arrives we could have the best midfield quartet in the Prem.

Figo   Gerrard   Alonso  Kewell

And this lot would be 85% of teams first choice

  Garcia   Zenden   Hamann  Gonzales

Add to that Sissoko, La Tallec a few promising youngsters and were starting to look very tasty.

In seasons past when someone dropped out the first team through injury or we needed to change something during a game there didn't seem to be many options but i must say Rafa is building an incredibly strong squad which is just what we need.

If years of Championship Manager addiction have taught me anything, it's that you can never have too many quality midfielders. :D
Of course, by that same logic, Rafa would go undefeated in the Prem every season using my magical 3-1-3-1-2 formation.
Really though, as RED ANT said, our current load gives us basically two full midfields (though putting Gonzales in there is a bit premature) plus a few quality backups. Sure, we could use another defender, but I hardly think having such a robust midfield is a bad thing.

the midfield is just nice in terms of quality and number provided Figo came.

I hated how we didn't have enough quality squad players last year due to injuries.

Having a surplus of hungry players in Rafa's rotation system is going to be so sweet.

RAFA!!! Please get us Milito and Gallas!!!!!!
We really need to beef up our defense in the case of any of our back four getting injured.

If we get those 2 and Figo, it is going to be sooooo freakin' awesome.
Mourinho was customizing his flashy blue racing car -- applying the finishing touches of go-faster stripes, aerodynamic spoilers and a fat f@ck you exhaust -- while on his red car, Benitez was trying to glue together a broken chassis, repair bodywork and replace burst tyres.

People complain when there are no signings and now complain cos there have been to many midfield signings  :D

No seriously though i would like to see a couple of defenders coming in. We can safely say he wants another centre back as he knew we needed another last season even though Pellegrino didn't work out. I am worried about the left back position though, as much as i like the person Traore i get too nervous watching his nervousness on the ball. The links with a full back seemed to have died down but we shall see. I would think Rafa still has a bit of cash to spend otherwise he would not have paid out £5m for Sissoko - who is probably not gonna be first choice.

you all talking about backup and that the big squad is good for us, but you don"t get my point.
In the optimistic way big squad is good because we have backup and big squad brings compititon for the first team, but in the pasimistic way big squad can frastrate players who aren't playing and this frastretion can bring to bad play and then it is the problem of the hole team(for example Kezman).

What the hell are you whinging about?

Gerrard, Alonso, Sissoko, Gonzales, Hamann, Garcia, Kewell, Zenden, Riise and possibly even Figo.

Show me a better collection of midfielders in the Premiership than that?  ???

What we need and what's available are two different things .

Chelsea are struggling to sign what they want despite the limitless cash , and at the other end of the table newly promoted Wigan are strugglling to attract quality players despite have (reportedly) £25 million to spend.

Yeah ,we could do with a quality defender and from the gallas rumour Rafa is apparently addressing that problem.

If i was Rafa i would go to Division 1 or 2 and get young attackers, defenders and midfielders(all young)And then when they are older start playing them and they will probabaly be better than they were.If he does that then the young ones will be stronger, more aggresive, skills and more balance. What do you think.

I agree with you Woofy but i would rather go for Matthew Upson rather than William Gallas.
