Central midfielders - What should we do?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Cool Hand Luke » Thu Nov 04, 2004 3:46 pm

Biscan's performance has thrown up the argument of what should be done with all the central midfielders we have at the club.

These are the CMs we have at the club:

Box to Box,Gearrad/Alonso/Biscan/Welsh/Potter

Anchor Men,Hamann/Diao/Diarra.

Gerrard - Most important player. Hope he stays but not sure.

Alonso - Class act will be vital if Gerrard leaves.

Biscan - Plays a similar role to the above, but he is not of the same quality, contract expiries end of season.

Welsh - One of our most promising youngsters, likes to bomb foward, has bags of energy, captain of the reserve side, still to make a significant breakthrough.

Potter - Hasn't impressed much when given the chance, not sure how he will develop, maybe a loan deal would be good for him.

Hamann - Has been a regular for some time, ageing, but can still do a good job, Benitiez wants him to sign new contract.

Diao - Has failed to take the chances he has had this season. Showed early promise but hasn't been able to stay in the team. I think he will leave.

Diarra - Has been on loan since he arrived. Has broken into the French squad after good performances in France. I doubt Benitiez will play him as he lacks the technical baility. Not sure what will happen.

In my opinion 4 senior central midfielders is the MAX if we want to have any chance of integrating the younger players.

What would you do?

I think we should have let Hamann go and if Gerrard is staying then Biscan should also leave.

In replacement we should sign Mark Van Bommel who's contract also expiries at the end of the season.

Perhaps get Diarra over here and have a look at him?

Why not just have Gerrard and Alonso as first choice.

Didi third, Biscan or Welsh 4th.

Let Potter develope.

Sell Diao and Diarra.

Its a daft question this.

If Gerrard does stay then I think you won't find a better 2 than Alonso and Gerrard, especially when they gel as a partnership. Hamman has been a good servant to this club, and would be a good cover if any of the two above got injured. But like you said cool hand like he is ageing and we need to bring in a replacement, and if Igor keeps on putting performances like he has been then we are good for the centre.

My main concern is the wingers as Kewell has not been playing well this season and Garcia has not been consistent.

Its not as simple as 1st,2nd,3rd,etc, choice. Different players play in different roles within central midfield.

I agree we should sell Diao and Diarra, it may seem harsh on Diarra but I don't think he has the technical ability to cut it in a Benitiez team.

If Gerrard stays then I think there isn't room for Biscan.

I think we need someone to do the "dirty work" in central midfield, Van Bommel would be perfect and hes on a free in the summer.

It is perfectly simple. You pick your best players first then the tactics.

As for van Bommel, do you really think he's in Xabi or Stevie's class?

Get real.

Xabi and Stevey between them have practically everything. The only thing they miss maybe is the ability to arrive late in the box for a header or a sharp finish. Everything else they both have in abundance.

Gerrard has immense physical pressence and is a superb tackler. he's very good technically and has good intelligence.

Xabi is very good pyshically but is world class tecnhically and has to pclass game intelligence which will improve with experience.

van Bommel is a poor mans Alonso.

The two are the perfect mix and it will show over the coming years.

Van Bommel is a very differnent player to both Alonso and Gerrard.

Anyway I'm quiet sure Gerrard will be of in the summer so we should at least have some contingency plans in place.

IF and I mean IF Gerrard is sold, Rafa will have someone lined up to replace him.

However, i can't see Rafa selling Stevie.

Also, van Bommel is an overated player. I'd rather have Thomas Graveson than him.

Gerrard and Alonso will be the central midfield pairing at this club for a long time.

I don't think Rafa will have much of a choice, Gerrard has the abilty to be a "Great", I don't think that he will hang around and wait for Liverpool to sort them selves out, even though he is a true red.

He's not a true red. He will stick around.

Alonso has as much ability.

Why do you say he is not a true red, just because he had talks with Chelsea?

That aswell.

He's a turncoat.

He was a blue before he joined Liverpool's academy.

We should get Diarra back anyway, big strong midfielder like him Diao is leavin anyway cause hes cr.ap. But the midfield is not our problem, as rafa said its a problem but a nice problem to have, to many midfielders, should be looking at getting 2 forwards and a CD come january.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.
