On paper GH doesn't look to bad, it was on the pitch that it all went wrong.

Yeah he won some silver ware which is great but he didn't win the trophy which matter the most to us reds.......... THE LEAGUE.

He played people out of position ruining their confidence and also bought bad players for lots of money.  :(

He's also better than Fagan in quantity of trophies collected.
Madrid and Bayern have just also sacked their managers.
So it can happen to every manager in every level.
We probably are too demanding for figures of the old greats e.g Shankly, Paisley that makes GH looks worse than he actually is.

even roy evans managed to finish in the top 3 a few times when he was manager, and he didn't spend anywhere near £120m.

i agree he wasn't the same man after that but who would be?

How can you suggest that Houllier was better than Fagan.  Fagan reached two European Cup finals in two years in charge.  We won the first in '84 and were robbed of the second in '85 when Gary Gillespie fouled outside the box but the referee gave a penalty.  He may have inherited great players but he still had to motivate them.  And don't forget that he steered them to the '85 European cup final following the departure of Graeme Souness to Sampdoria the previous summer.

Finally, Regarding Houllier "losing the plot after his operation", it is ironic that if Houllier had stepped down following his heart attack he would not be now be looked upon as being a Liverpool legend.

Houllier could have been a legend, clearly the turning point was the 20m gamble on Cheyrou, Diouf and Diao.
If we had got 3 players then who worked out well we could have won the premiership.

for me the turning point was subbing hamann against leverkeusen in the 2001-2002 champions league quarter final second leg. that was the start of the demise.
