If Aquilani turns out to be a sensation, and if Pacheco can make it as a realistic attacking option, and if Kelly can come in and do a decent job at RB or CB, then we may have a smidgeon of a chance.
Otherwise I'd say no - it's not at all likely. Essentially that's because I don't believe we can win the league with a midfield mainstay of Masch-Lucas, and I don't believe we can win the league if our only alternative striking options are Kuyt and Ngog.
If we want to have a realistic shot at it, as a minimum we need one proper midfielder and one proper striker. That midfielder has to be an above average passer of the ball who is able to hold is own - someone like Barry - and that striker has to be capable of holding the ball up and posing a decent goal threat, someone like Jones or Huntelaar.
Ideally, though, I'd want to see two proper strikers come in, with Pacheco stepping up too, providing four viable attacking options (Pacheco is versatile). Along with the new CM and strikers, I'd want another CB - a commanding one like Dunne. To part-fund these moves I'd be shipping out Babel, Degen, Ngog and possibly Skrtel and Lucas.
But, changes in personnel will count for little if the players don't apply themselves - another assumption which up until this season tended to be safe. And I suppose that's where the present and future situation folds in. We've seen a return to the basics of late - prompting this thread no doubt - but having experienced so many false dawns in a season of such expectation, I think we'll need to see a more extended period of back-to-basics football before we can have the same degree of confidence - as before - in that assumption.
