Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Reading this, i can

1)laff - if bolton or BS qualify for champions league QUALIFIERS.... they won't get more than 3.56 million ..and i am being very very very (to the power of 100) leinient here (look below).

2)cry - If we don't qualify for champions league, its a huge financial loss..... Can only cry. (But i know we will win it).

No wonder wenger once said, it is better to finish 4th then to finish 5th & win the FA cup. I don't really like it, but this is how the game is now.

Anyway, we should have gotten about 20 million by now. If the board don't give any more money, this should be decent money for rafa to make more changes to the squad. (not taking into account, the transfer fees for out-going players). So by all accounts, it should be an eventful summer for LFC.

note - stop hitting out at kewell for sitting on his a$$. Viduka is earning more than him, and i am sure kewell played more matches than him :p

Anyway here is the break down.

Champions League Income

It's all about the money...
but how much have Liverpool earnt?

Following Liverpool reaching the semi finals of the Champions League, fans have been asking what it means in terms of money, This Is Anfield forum regular geebo investigates...

Last year Chelsea earned £19.4 million from the Champions League, they reached the semi finals before being eliminated by Monaco. The winners Porto made only £13.2m though - largely due to television coverage (as detailed below).

Champions League Money Distribution:

Teams participating in the group phase : £3.56m
For each win : £325,000
For each draw : £162,000
Reaching the knockout stage : £1.62m
Reaching the quarter-finals : £1.95m
Reaching the semi-finals : £2.60m
Finishing runner-up : £3.90m
Winning the final : £6.50m

The reason Chelsea earned so much was because of the "pool money", cash distributed to clubs on the basis of the size of their country's TV market. In 2001-02 England got £30.0m pool money to be divided between the three qualifing clubs (Manu £12.0m, Arsenal £10.0m and Liverpool £8.0m)

Liverpool’s (estimated) winning so far this season:

Pool money £8.0m (guessed)
Group phase £3.56m
Wins 6......... £1.95m
Draws 2........ £0.324m
Knockout stage £1.62m
Quarter finals £1.95m
Semis £2.60m
TOTAL £20.0 million

Plus Liverpool get money from there sponsors (eg Carlsberg, Reebok etc) for getting further in the competition. That could be between £1.0m and £10.0 million depending on the contracts. Plus advertising bonuses and gate money from 10 european games. That could also be another £10.0 million.
So the £20.0 mil of prize money could theoretically double.

In comparison to the FA Cup, thats a lot of money:
Winners 1 £2,000,000, Runner-Up 1 £1,000,000
Sixth Round Winners 4 £400,000, Fifth Round 8 £150,000, Fourth Round 16 £75,000, Third Round 32 £50,000, Second Round 20 £15,000, Fourth Round 32 £10,000, Extra Preliminary 65 £500.
You can see financially why Rafa played a young team against Burnley!

From national football TV coverage Liverpool earned nearly £10.0 mil in 2003:
Manchester United £11.46m 1st place in the league
Arsenal £9.89m 2nd
Liverpool £9.69m 5th
Newcastle United £7.10m 3
Chelsea £6.35m 4
Tottenham Hotspur £5.65m 10

You can balance these winnings with one interesting statistic. Players wages:

Top 22 earners from Aug 2004:
Roy Keane Man you 100,000 (5.2 mil per year)
Steven Gerrard Lverpool 90,000
Michael Owen Liverpool 80,000
Ruud Van Nistelroy Man you 80,000
Frank Lampard Chelsea 80,000 (4.7 mil)
Ryan Giggs Man you 75,000
Paul Scholes Man you 75,000
Patrick Vieira Arsenal 72,000
Thierry Henry Arsenal 72,000
Damien Duff Chelsea 70,000
Mark Viduka Middlesbro' 68,000
Robert Pires Arsenal 67,000
Patrick Kluivert Newcastle 67,000
Didier Drogba Chelsea 65,000
Alan Smith Man you 65,000
Louis Saha Man you 65,000
Harry Kewell Liverpool 62,000
Robbie FowlerMan City 62,000
Kevin Campbell Everton 62,000
Nicolas Anelka Man City 60,000
Robbie Keane Tottenham60,000
Duncan Ferguson Everton 60,000
(I assume these figures dont include all bonuses for winning etc)

So with a £30 to £40 million Champions League income, you can pay Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard's basic wages For 3 to 4 years. And bear in mind we’d like to have 24 players of that calibre.....
