Be honest - How long have you rated carragher

We always knew JC had tons of heart (as does Mellor) but how long did it take you to see the ability of the lad, how long has it been there.

Up to 2 seasons ago I thought that JC was a decent squad player but no more, he was full back and offerred nothing attacking wise (which a full back must do).

Now he is a rock solid centre back and covering Hypia's shortcomings. I'd never have thought JC had the ability to become the player he has.

BE HONEST - when did you really rate his ABILITY (not heart)

Day one, his first game against Villa.

Great tackles tidy on the ball and a great header to score the first goal. He complimented Redknapp superbly that day.

I am sick of idiots claiming he was never a good player. He always has been, to be honest, fools like Banana who were stating he was "pizz" last season have had it shoved right back down there throats.

If I'm honest I do remember criticising Carragher in 2002/03 when he was played at right back and he showed no flair nor invention that season and he really suffered a crisis of confidence. However, the criticism was justified as he was disapointing that year and it was probably his poorest season at Liverpool and Gerrard Houllier then went out and bought Steve Finnan.

However, people should not forget that in 2000/01 Carragher had an excellent season at left back, and all of us loved him as well back then.

He was entitled to one bad season (and "bad" is probably being a bit harsh) and that was two years ago. Long time ago now!

JBG, he wasn't bad that season at all.

Defensively he simply a different class.

He lacked confidence going forward, but defensively he was as solid if not more so than anything in the league.

I always thought that he had fantastic defensive ability. Very determined, excellent concentration, good header of the ball, good timer of tackles, doesn’t take risks, good positional awareness and tidy on the ball.

The dilemma was that, he didn’t have the attacking qualities to make a genuine fullback, so he was always just going to be a steady Eddie there. But did he have the qualities to be a centre back, I just didn’t know. But boy do I know now.

The only weakness he has is a lack of real body strength. But I think this has been his best season by far. I admit I said that he wasn’t good enough to be a first team fullback. But surely now he will be at the heart of our defence for at least the next 5 years.

To be honest i really thought he came of age as a good quality player last season although like you said he didnt have a lot to offer going forward in his fullback position ,i appreciated his defensive qualitys.

And even years before that he had been consistent but last year i noticed it more,Finnan is the same this seaon very consistent and has settled well there.

But this season Caragher has been something else, he has been a colosuss at the back .His new found position seems to love him the
way he loves Liverpool he looks so comfortable there.
Jamie Caragher is my vote as Liverpools player of the year. :D

I have to agree with Stu there.

Maybe when he was a bit younger, in the Roy Evans day he was a bit suspect, but he was plying with a bunch of clowns.

Defensively he has been great for the last 5 years.

I think Carra started to show his true potential after he came back from injury last year

Look at my post Stu: I watered down the "bad". He was solid defensively that year but Carragher epitomised a lot what was wrong with us that season: ok at times but completely devoid of confidence and most of the time not sure what the manager wanted from him.

He's an absolute belter of a player, one from the old school.

There's a real "I listened to the Verve years before Bittersweet Symphony was released" element to the thread.

Next thing people will be saying they were singing Benitez' praises when he was at Extremendura (or however its spelt).

It wasnt hard to listen to bittersweet symphony years before it was released as its a Rolling Stones song

I thought he was great as left back but as a stop gap but Im in the camp that thought he wasnt all that as a right back and he was exposed by Arsenal badly and it was then I thought he was an average player

I have stated before on this forum that JC has well made me eat my words this season but gladly so  :)
