As discussed in other threads the midfield is the main problem at the moment.  Our options seem to be keep it the same, drop Gerrard back or hope Aquilani is the solution.

In the short term I'd drop Stevie back, but over a whole season I fear we'd lose some of our attacking strength, because we don't even have a decent centre forward to throw on alongside Torres instead.

If Aquilani settles in quickly and Benitez has got this signing right, it could save our season.  Even though it's early I have to admit I have some serious reservations about us challenging, let alone winning, the title from what I've seen so far.

Spot on mate, i'm hoping aquilani fella is the real deal, because if he turns out to be cr@p, then we are in big trouble, but if he turns out to be a world beater (which im really really hoping for) and compliments mascherano (as benitez said) then that would be great news!

Lets hope he turns out to be a world beater so we can get back into it.

please don't fail us aquilani

Nah mate that'd be harsh.

If you've had a couple of seasons like Lucas however, then you're fair game as far as I'm concerned.

i know why he did'nt choose to play for arsenal or chelski now,,

Quoting this because it seems to have been missed. He's not a fascist:

“My uncle is very keen on Mussolini and he gave me some things to do with him.

“I have a statue and a few photographs and portraits of Mussolini at home. But as for me, I don’t know anything about politics.”

Put's a different spin on it altogether.

I'm just looking forward to seeing him play.

well I think its important to note that facisism is not inherently racist , just most fascists have seemed to added it onto their agenda, but really it has to do with opposing both capitalism and communism via the "third way"

Further, I think from reading what some Roma fans have had to say, that Alberto doesn't seem much of a thinker, and probably doesn't care too much either way, as that quote about the uncle and mussolini shows.

And most importantly, if he doesn't bring it up in the dressing room, then who cares? And it would be odd for someone in a foreign country to talk about fascist beliefs anyway.

His political beliefs are a shame if it's true he's a fascist, but I don't personally think it overly matters from a football point of view. As long as he is a decent central midfielder (becasue we really could do with one lets be honest here ) then it's all good.

Gents, Italian politics has always been a great confusion of beliefs, sufference and shameful unconcern for corruption, deceit and ethics. Its probably the biggest contrast with UK/US etc.. I think the lad would have to explain what he means before judging him - or, all members of this forum read up on Italian political history.

Skysports:

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has hinted that new signing Alberto Aquilani is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation from surgery, but cannot put a date on a possible return.

The Italy international was bought from Roma in the summer as a £20million replacement for Xabi Alonso, who joined Real Madrid.

But Aquilani is recovering from an ankle operation and it was announced when he joined the Reds that it could be eight weeks before he was ready for action.

Benitez, though, is pleased with the progress of the 25-year-old, who has a reputation for being susceptible to injury, as he has already started working in the gym.

Clever
"Alberto is improving," the Reds boss told the club's official website. "We were talking before about six to eight weeks and after a few weeks his ankle is much better but he will need time.

"He's in the swimming pool and in the gym and working with the physios but he's not jogging yet.

"We cannot put a date on things and it's important to just see how he progresses.

"We are checking on him regularly and he had a scan in the past week which showed he is much better.

"It's just a case of keeping an eye on him every day. When he does start to play everyone will see what a clever player he is."

No pressure on the lad then. New team, new city, new culture, new fans to win over and he has the added pressure of being the kingpin of LFC's title challenge 2009/10  :lookaround

Let's be realistic - I think his potential impact on our title challenge will be minimal. The time it takes him to settle (as is the norm with new players coming from overseas) means the chances are we won't see the best of Aquilani until the latter part of this season at the earliest.

We have been spoilt by Torres coming to the EPL and more than hitting the ground running from day one however it is far more common for players to take quite a bit of time to get used to the league, the manager, the team etc. I really hope I am proven wrong and he comes in from the start and does great but I cannot see it.
