6 year old being scouted - Dylan collard

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby AussieKopite » Sat May 20, 2006 1:52 am

I found this article, published in a Sydney newspaper. What do you guys think? Could this be putting too much pressure on the lad? Whats the youngest we should be looking at?

If he does sign, at least we can all say, "I remember when he was 6 years old" :D

Liverpool FC eyes six-year-old

HE may be just six years old but already Dylan Collard is shooting for the biggest boots in Australian soccer.

Dylan not only dreams about emulating his hero Harry Kewell but Kewell's club Liverpool FC is already showing interest in him.

The Premier League giant recently asked for a tape of Dylan's advanced talents, which have earned him a spot in Soccer NSW's elite junior squad.

Dylan's mother Andreia suspected her son was destined for stardom when, just moments after he learned to walk, he began relentlessly kicking a football.

"When he was little the ball was like his teddy bear, he would kiss it good night and sleep with it," Mrs Collard said.

Dylan, of Acacia Creek, near Blacktown, boots up to 10 goals a match for AC United in western Sydney's junior league and can match skills with prodigies two and three years older.

"I like soccer because you can use skill and play, but with things like Play Station you can't actually be in the game yourself," Dylan said yesterday.

Soccer NSW mentor Paul Bentvelzen, who trains Dylan and other gifted youngsters, said it was rare, but not unheard of, for European clubs to look at six-year-olds.

I'm so against it I can't even begin to mention why.

I mean, fair game, the boy loves footie, but jesus, 6 years?  At least let him learn how to tie his own shoelaces.

Football's a game, I wouldn't want any children losing out on that critical period of their life because of football pressure and trainings.  Mind you, I don't think that's what'd happen here, but that's too young.

I don't have a problem with a "first refusal" agreement with his parents, but I definately don't think we should sign him until he's 15-ish.

I think you're right there Lando. Let him be a lad for a while, at least he likes Harry Kewell which points him towards Liverpool.

Hope the parents decide to move to england in a few years. Isnt that what happend with Harry? Parents moved in order to give their son the best chance to follow the footballing dream?
6 is a bit young, doesnt matter who he is, hes not going to get into any pro first team untill hes at least 15/16, so this might have to be a sticky in the rumour thread for a while :D
Im glad to see Australia producing some talent!!!

Isn't there a FIFA or UEFA push for more 'home grown' players for the champions league? If that is the case, then poaching youngsters from different countries may be more apparent in the years to come...

That's a really good thought. I know for myself living in Australia though, if I suddenly got enough skill and fitness that I attracted interest from EPL clubs, because my Grandfather is English (my father since naturalised) I'm able to go to England and gain citizenship very quickly (thus making me an English player). I think that this practise may be more prevalent with youngsters in countries such as Mexico where the parents get an oppotunity to get out of poverty. (hopefully not just using their son.)

sign him up and see what he looks like in 8 or 9 years. You never know where the next Pele or Gerrard are going to come from.

Maybe Sven will get appointed to the Australia job and have him named in the 2010 World Cup Squad.

LOL yeah. There was a good sketch the other day on Dead Ringers. "Svens Kiddie World Cup Camp". In al fairness though its a bit early. But its nice to see the club looking to all ages to really secure a good future for the club. Didnt we get some 11 year old Kenyan on out books a few months ago. i think were putting his family up and everything so he can go to the academy.

Youngsters are a lot more important these days. Although i agree 6 is a bit too far. Man Utd just signed some 15 year old kid from Brazil but obviously loaned him out to one of their feeder clubs. Pele has said that he can be better than any of the current first teamers including Ronaldinho
