I know some people think all this isn't a big deal but do you think calling a black man a n****r okay? So why should it be okay to call an irishman a picky if we take it as bad as that?

DD you tinker.

Do you really think that DD?

If you really feel that way, then fair enough. Personally, I couldn't give a shite if someone called me a pikey.

Maybe it's because I'm from Dublin?

I dunno.

"Pikey" is derived from the same source as "Turnpike". It's from the old English word "Pyke", which kind of meant "go away".

Therefore calling someone a "Pikey" meant that you wished them to "go away".

I also heard an alternative to the above, in that "Pikey" refered to "pikemen" in the army of the 15th/16th Centuries. In later years of its use, Pikemen were poorly trained troops and often their ranks contained conscript Scots, Welsh and Irish men within the English Army...hence the derogatory name "Pikey" became stuck for Irish people living in England, although not for the Welsh and Scots, strangely enough.

Of course because you aren't a gypsy. I have used that word, and do use that word, when referring to actual gypsies who tear up football pitches and farmland illegally. But I would never use that word to refer to an Irish man. It would be a bit hypocritical as my dad's side of the family are all Irish.

What I would say is that to you the comparison with 'pikey' and the 'n' word is the same but globally the 'n' word carries far more weight due to its use within the era of slavery. The word alone is a representation of a whole dark age of humanity.

For the record I am awesome. All I'm saying is Judge didn't CALL ANYONE A PIKEY!!! He was taking the pi$$ out of a 'national' day that is just known for drinking and fighting, as shown on the simpsons, which everyone laughed at.

I thought the irish had a sense of humour? (now thats opening a whole new barrel of fish)

Maybe it did have nothing to do with me, its just society today with no one taking a joke that is just upsetting. If jusdge had said someone was a pikey, thats different, but he didnt, he made a joke. John Bishop makes jokes about scousers stealing things all the time, calling himself a scally, is that that different? London is abused all the time as a cold city where everyone is mean and no noe talks to each other so is that the same? Scots are all drunks, welsh have sex with sheep, the french smell and are lazy and scared to fight. Every country has its stereotype, judge didnt do any of this. He said St Pikeys day, and if you go out in England on this day, you'd agree with what hes saying, not about the irish, but about how the event is treated all over the world.
