Philippe Coutinho set to become Liverpool FC's second January signing

INTER Milan midfielder Philippe Coutinho is set to become Liverpool FC’s second signing of the January transfer window.

The Reds’ initial bid of 6million euros (£5million) was rejected by the Italian club but they are ready to increase that offer to push the deal through.

Cash-strapped Inter are willing to sell the 20-year-old Brazil international, who has indicated he’s keen on a move to Anfield.

Liverpool are confident further negotiations this week will reach a successful conclusion and Coutinho is viewed as a hugely exciting talent.

Blessed with pace and technically gifted, the versatile youngster can play in central midfield, out wide or in the No 10 role as a second striker.

Boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to add to the £12million signing of striker Daniel Sturridge with at least two more new faces before the window shuts next week.

The arrival of Coutinho won’t stop Liverpool from looking to complete a deal for Blackpool winger Tom Ince - but only if the price is right.

Liverpool value 20-year-old Ince at £6million. Under the terms of Ince’s departure to the Championship club 18 months ago, the Reds are entitled to 35% of any sale so their cash offer is £4million.

Blackpool turned that down, demanding an extra £2million, but the Reds have no intention of meeting those demands.

Unless the Seasiders have a change of heart, Rodgers is prepared to walk away in the knowledge that the England Under-21s international will enter the final year of his contract this summer.

Liverpool’s hopes of signing Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder were dashed last night after the attacking midfielder agreed to move to Galatasaray for £6.3million.

The Reds held initial talks with the Dutch international’s representatives but they weren’t able to match the Turkish side’s lucrative contract offer of £100,000 per week after tax.

Sneijder favoured a move to the Premier League but wasn’t prepared to take a significant pay cut in order to realise that ambition.

Instead Liverpool’s attentions are now focused on Sneijder’s former team-mate Coutinho.

The Brazilian, who began his career at Vasco da Gama in his homeland, was sold to Serie A outfit Inter for 4million euros at the age of 16 in 2008.

He remained at Vasco on loan for a further two years and made his full international debut in 2010 in a friendly against Iran.

Coutinho finally moved to Inter in July 2010 and made his debut a month later in the UEFA Super Cup final against Atletico Madrid.

After finding his opportunities limited, he spent the second half of last season on loan at Espanyol and he impressed in Spain, scoring five goals in 16 league appearances.

This season Coutinho has grown frustrated at once again being on the fringes of the Inter squad and he’s ready to make a fresh start at Anfield.

i hope we sign this coutinho, if we have any asperations of competing for the top prizes in the game we are going to need top players.
obviously we cant go out and buy a falcao or messi so we need to buy these stars before they turn into £50m supernova`s.
in other words we need to gamble.
well, the way i look at it is if we have to gamble at least lets gamble on ridiculously skillfull south americans
yes, there are genuine questions about wether he`s strong enough and i know the lads career has stalled a bit at inter but is that really a surprise at 20? he`s only a few months older than wisdom!
the lad has got immense raw talent (he`s like a mini ronaldinho) and personally i think he`s worth gambling on, if he turns out to be a flop then so be it, at least we aimed high.
but if we get lucky and he does come good we could have one of the best players in the world on our hands.

puzzles me as to why we are looking to sign this coutinho lad when we would be better off upping the bid for ince who would be more suited to the prem as he is clearly able to handle english football. not that i have anything against coutinho and he is highly rated but so is joao carlos teixera who has seemed to fall off the face of the planet since coming here.
it would be a silly move on our behalf to sign another 20 year old central midfielder with "potential" when we already have one in the ranks that we dont seem to know what to do with.
up the bid for ince who can make a difference for us this season and will push or oust downing for a starting spot :nod

No.

That was the original loan terms, the actual loan terms he moved on were without a guaranteed purchase, only an option to buy.

The newly promoted club had initially offered Liverpool a £2m loan fee plus a guaranteed £17m should they avoid relegation from the Premier League this season. They are also prepared to pay all of Carroll's £80,000-a-week wage. The deal now under discussion is for a £1.5m loan fee with an option to buy the forward next summer, not a guarantee.

Liverpool's acceptance of the revised offer underlines their desire to part company with their record transfer, even if, for now, that only extends to the loan fee and taking his wage bill off the club's books.

thanks for that SCS, i thought they had to buy as part of the deal.
unless he returns from injury and makes a real difference for them then i expect him to return here and we face a summer of trying to ship him out again or let him go for next to nothing.
knowing us though we will loan him out again.

Another loan is possible but I would like to see Rodgers make room for him next season.

Even whilst the squad is developing and we bring in new talent (Sturridge, etc), there will still be games in which the opposition tactics cause us issues. Stoke is a prime example where we dropped our passing game and pumped balls into the box to a tiny striker like Suarez.

For Carroll represents a plan B, even if he is restricted to cup games and tricky physcial league games like Stoke, Everton, etc

Liverpool and Coutinho are hopeful it will happen. The player is very excited about move! Fee close to be agreed but not yet. Hope it happens

Coutinho great talent, certainly worth £10m. And he is quick, special. Will take time to adapt but will offer magic straight away if he comes

coutinho is on a different planet to ince in terms of potential mate, this lad was being compared to the likes of ronaldinho when he was coming through the ranks in brazillian football. his career has stalled a bit at inter but he had a loan spell at espanyol at the end of last season where he looked very impressive.
ince and coutinho are the same age and not far off the same price but the difference between them is one of them has impressed in the lower league`s against the likes of peterborough whilst the other impressed at the nou camp v barcelona.
the espanyol supporters loved him, they thought he was brilliant.
ince has got the potential to be a good player but it just shows how over priced english players are when coutinho`s asking price is only a couple of million more than the fee blackpool want for ince!
and texeira has been injured but he`s back now and really playing well, i was reading a few comments over on rawk about him and apparently the lad has got amazing vision, everyone`s raving about him over there.
