In all serious though i am slighlty concerned that black players may have second thoughts about signing for us now after this whole Luis Suarez fiasco.

not really, glen johnson?

hes already here though, our reputation has been damaged over this whole mess, a lot of people think the club is condoning racism and may think that by joining Liverpool there reputation can be damaged, i hope im just being overly dramatic but i could be a factor.

anyone who's read the report and managed to form their own independant opinion knows exactly what Liverpool are against. The simple minded bafoons who thing we're condoning racism have read sensationalised media tripe and are lapping it up. We wouldn't want nob'eds like that anywhere near our great club anyway

if true, we'll have given Villa 40 million for Darren Bent and Stewart Downing

It's like a bad, bad dream.

Aston Villa makes sensational move for Chelsea’s Didier Drogba

Aston Villa are interested in signing Didier Drogba in a move that could pave the way for the shock January exit of Darren Bent, Goal.com has learned.

The Midlands club have expressed an interest in swooping for the Chelsea veteran, who turns 34 in March.

Drogba is out of contract in the summer and talks over an extension at Stamford Bridge have reached a stalemate, with the Londoners unwilling to exceed the one-year deal currently on the table.

However, Villa have indicated they would be willing to give Drogba the two-year contract that he wants from Chelsea.

Although Villa manager Alex McLeish has admitted he has limited funds to spend in this month’s transfer window, the sale of club-record signing Bent would free up the cash to match Drogba’s current salary of around £120,000-a-week.

Goal.com understands that Villa are expecting a fight this month to hold on to Bent, who is attracting strongly rumoured interest from Liverpool.

The Reds’ director of football Damien Comolli is a big admirer of Bent and was influential in taking the player to Tottenham from Charlton Athletic in 2007 when the Frenchman was at White Hart Lane.

Although Villa stress their prize asset is not for sale at any price, one source with knowledge of the situation said: “Villa are steeling themselves for bids for Bent this month. They are preparing for life without him and are seriously considering Drogba as a replacement.”

McLeish is believed to have an uneasy relationship with Bent, despite the striker’s record of a goal every other game since his surprise move from Sunderland 12 months ago.

The 27-year-old has scored a relatively meagre six Premier League goals this season but is gradually establishing himself at international level and is expected to be part of England’s Euro 2012 squad this summer.

Villa paid £18 million rising to £24m for Bent and have privately indicated that they will need to recoup that outlay to justify his sale to their supporters, who watched Stewart Downing and Ashley Young be sold last summer.

Potential replacements with proven Premier League pedigree are thin on the ground but Villa are closely monitoring Drogba’s contract situation.

The Ivory Coast international is currently assessing his options, with strong interest in him from suitors including cash-rich Chinese and Russian clubs, the MLS and Serie A.

He will be available for free in the summer and it is unlikely that Chelsea will ask for more than £3m this month for the player they brought to England from Marseille in 2004.

I wonder if the uneasy relationship comment means theres a chance Bent will leave?

I'd take Drogba on a 12 month contract as well. He'd teach Carol a lot about aggression in front of goal.

Bent isn't even on the top scorers list for this season and the least scorer on that list has 7.  so where has he scored 'all the goals' then cos it aint this season?!

Pretty decent stats. The big concern is those two years at Spurs where he hardly set the place on fire. I'd guess his time at Spurs probably gives us the best idea of how he'd do with us and our style. Not my first choice and especially if we are talking 24 mill, which would be what Villa would be wanting surely.

EDIT: Oh well, that is awful to look at. It looked great on the edit screen. Google it yourselves!!!

Whats the infatuation with overpriced english players? Surely we have our quota by now?

Nothing wrong with bent though, other than whats going to be a totally ridiculous pricetag for a decent ( not anywhere near worldclass ) striker.

Surely money would be better spent elsewhere?

In his last 100 games he’s scored 55 goals, that’s a better than a goal in every other game and a better ratio than Carroll, Suarez, Kuyt and Bellamy. He’s consistent I’ll give you that. Not the one season wonder, not ‘flavour of the month’ type player. 55 goals in 100 games shows he can do it over more than just a season.

That said I don’t want him. Like someone else alluded to, I also think he’s good enough for us. Another Downing type. Good player, but not good enough

The problem with Bent is the price, Villa will want at least £20 million as it's clear they don't want to sell.

I can't honestly see the owners wanted to pay that much in January.
Having bought Carroll , albeit, connected to FT leaving, they surely must be thinking how they can justify this deal especially as Carroll as hardly been a success yet.

The problem we have is the desperate need for a goal scorer, finding one now at a value price is not going to be easy.

I am hoping we get someone in who can offer some flair and creativity also, we really need a spark from somewhere.
