Liverpool are believed to be putting together a transfer bid for Birmingham City defender Scott Dann, with Arsenal and Spurs also interested.

The Anfield side are in the market for a centre-half to assist Martin Skrtel and Jamie Carragher, as well as the injury-plagued Daniel Agger.

Lifelong Liverpool fan Dann is believed to fit the bill for Reds manager Kenny Dalglish, and Birmingham are almost certain to cash in on one of their most saleable assets following their relegation.

Premier League rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are also believed to be interested in the player, but Liverpool are looking to get a bid in early to steal a march on the north London sides.

All three clubs have also been linked with Bolton Wanderers centre-back Gary Cahill.

But with Cahill valued at £18m and Dann at £10m, Dann is the preferred option for the Reds.

The 24-year-old former England under-21 international formed a formidable partnership with Roger Johnson at the heart of Blues' defence in the first half of the season.

His season-ending hamstring injury was cited as one of the major factors in Birmingham's decline in the new year, which despite victory in the Carling Cup final, culminated in their slide towards the Championship.

Much better out there then Dann, but i suppose he is a red so we would know hed give that little extra in games hes young enough also and hes proven in the premiership. Aslong as we make acouple of Marquee signings in the more problematic areas then id be happy with this.

Liverpool are closing in on making James McCarthy their first summer signing after the midfielder told Wigan Athletic he has his heart set on a move to Anfield, Goal.com can reveal.

Kenny Dalglish is a huge admirer of the 20-year-old and the Reds are believed to be willing to spend as much as £10 million to land one of the brightest prospects in the Premier League.

Chelsea are also understood to have registered an interest in McCarthy but Goal.com understands the player has told Wigan executives he wants them to reach an agreement with Liverpool.

Wigan had initially asked for £16m for the Republic of Ireland international but there have been indications that they are now ready to soften their stance, with manager Roberto Martinez promised he can re-invest money raised from player sales.

"It is 90 per cent done, all sides now seem to accept it is going to happen and it's a matter of everyone trying to get the best deal," a source close to the talks told Goal.com.

McCarthy turned down a move to Merseyside before joining Wigan for £1.2m from Scottish side Hamilton Academical in 2009 as he felt regular football would be better for his development. He now believes he has proven he is ready to take the next step and leave the DW Stadium.

McCarthy is under contract until 2014 but Wigan are regarded as a selling club by other English sides following the high profile transfers of Antonio Valencia and Wilson Palacios to Manchester United and Tottenham respectively.

While the Latics' financial game plan is based on selling players for a huge project, Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group want to build a squad based on the best young British talent.

McCarthy, who was born in Glasgow and can play either centrally or wide, fits that billing and Reds director of football Damien Comolli agrees with Dalglish that he will be a star of the future.

"Liverpool have shown the most interest for quite a while and have convinced him that it will be the best move to fulfil his potential," the source added. "Being a Glaswegian from a Celtic-supporting family, working with Dalglish is obviously a big factor as well."

Anfield legend Dalglish took over from Roy Hodgson in January and is planning significant moves in the summer transfer market after signing a three-year contract last month.

Along with Comolli, the club have identified a number of targets as they look to bolster the squad by signing at least two wide men, a central midfielder, a left-back and a centre-back.

Aston Villa star Ashley Young is their No.1 target as Dalglish looks to bring in a new winger, with Sylvain Marveaux also expected to arrive from Rennes on a free transfer. The Reds have also registered an interest in £20m-rated Eden Hazard, the attacking midfielder at Lille who is a target for a number of leading European clubs.

Liverpool have shown a strong interest in Bolton centre-back Gary Cahill and Blackburn's Phil Jones, while Newcastle star Jose Enrique is their first choice left-back.

yup, heard the same thing as well. apparently he couldn't agree terms with Villa so he's been released along with Pires and Carew, among others whom i've never heard of.

Nigel Reo-Coker and John Carew leave Aston Villa

Aston Villa have released 10 out-of-contract players including Nigel Reo-Coker, John Carew and Robert Pires.

Midfielder Reo-Coker joined Villa for £8.5m in July 2007 while striker Carew arrived in January that year from Lyon in a swap deal with Milan Baros.

Ex-Arsenal winger Pires leaves after joining on a free transfer in January.

Moustapha Salifou, Isaiah Osbourne, Harry Forrester, Arsenio Halfhuid, Durrell Berry, Ellis Deeney and Calum Flanagan have also been released.

Reo-Coker, 27, fell out of favour under previous manager Martin O'Neill but has featured regularly for Villa this season under the stewardship of Gerard Houllier, making 30 league appearances, and frequently deputised for Stiliyan Petrov as captain.

The former England Under-21 captain, who began his career at Wimbledon, was signed by O'Neill from West Ham.

Carew, 31, netted 52 goals in 133 appearances for Villa and had an impressive strike-rate in the FA Cup, scoring 11 times in 10 games.

He joined Stoke City on loan in January, where he netted twice in 13 appearances.

Pires, 37, who was without a club after leaving Villarreal last summer, arrived at Villa Park on a six-month contract and made just four starts, netting once against Blackburn in the FA Cup.

Togo international Salifou only made 13 appearances for Villa since joining in August 2007 while Osbourne, 23, is looking for a new club after having his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday ended early in April.

Geez I can't believe you guys are wasting your time and energy chasing after these rumours and posting it on here... if there is something that's really happening the more reliable journalists and papers will report... why go and search for rumours and all those shitty sites and papers and twitter... :Oo:
