Arsenal are once again making big moves in the window to close the gap on City, they've just signed Calafiori to strengthen a already strong defence.

If we stand still in another big transfer window, then all our hard work over the last 8 years will be wasted and we'll slowly go back to being a club struggling to get in the top 4.

If that Calafiori guy is as good as Saliba I reckon Arsenal will win the league. I definitely have them favourites, they're hungry.

He's dubbed one of the best young Italian deffenders right now but he's had only one good season so you can't know for sure.

In any case they got him for a decent price for today's standards so great bit of business by them.

Apparently a proper player

They spent (net) about a billion Euros over the last 10 years where we spent about 500m.

And that is modern football in a nutshell.
If you can't stand the heat stay out of the kitchen while the big boys wins titles.
Nobody gives about the romantic notion that you shouldn't spend big. No, you spend big and win or you do not and lose.

We are now a couple of weeks away from the new season, and still nothing.

What’s more, our squad is smaller.

I hope there is some sort of plan behind the scene, otherwise we are going to struggle.

I read somewhere that we will be signing a CB, a DM and a wide attacker in the next 10 days and they have been working on it.

I hope you’re right, because the closer you get to the end of the window the less likely teams will be willing to sell players they don’t have time to replace.

If we don't bring anyone in it looks more like a cashflow crisis than believing we can challenge for top spot with what we have.

According to David Ornstein, usually a good source, we've identified a no.6 player from outside the Premier League and that is our top priority.

Manuel Ugarte and 5 other options for Liverpool's problem position as Reds ready for transfer
Liverpool appear to be closing in on making their first new signing of the summer transfer window, with boss Arne Slot set to solve a problem that has caused him trouble all

Liverpool finally appear to be ready to make their first signing of the summer after returning from a tour of the United States.

New boss Arne Slot is yet to see any fresh faces arrive at Anfield since he replaced Jurgen Klopp earlier this summer. While they enjoyed an unbeaten tour, there is an acceptance that new players are needed.

The priority position for the Reds' transfer chiefs appears to be in midfield, with reports suggesting they are closing in on signing a specialist No.6 from outside the Premier League.

A number of players who fit that description have been linked with a move to Merseyside. Here, Mirror Football looks at six players who could become Slot's first signing as Liverpool manager.

Manuel Ugarte
The Uruguayan only joined PSG last summer but already looks set to leave the Parc des Princes. He fell out of favour under Luis Enrique as the season progressed, though did still help PSG win a domestic treble.

Manchester United were heavily linked with making a move for the 23-year-old. But the Red Devils now appear to have abandoned their pursuit, likely signalling a rival team has moved ahead of them.

Ugarte already has 22 caps for Uruguay and is seen as being a combative defensive midfielder, topping the Ligue 1 charts for most tackles made last term, despite only appearing 25 times.

Morten Frendrup
The Dane played a starring role for Genoa as they won promotion from Serie B in 2023. He became an undisputed starter for the Italian side in the top-flight last season, developing a reputation for being an excellent ball-winning midfielder.

Frendrup is still yet to win a senior cap for his country, though was a regular for their junior sides. He only signed a new contract in February though, which may make him a more expensive option.

Ederson
No, Liverpool are not about to sign Manchester City's keeper to play in midfield. Instead, this Ederson has impressed for Atalanta since joining the Serie A side two years ago, helping them to win the Europa League last season.

His performances for his club earned him his first call-up to the Brazilian national team, playing at the Copa America this summer. At the age of 25, he is slightly older than the previous two options.

Alan Varela

Alan Varela has a bright future and has caught the eye at Porto
While he only joined Porto last summer, Varela has emerged as a top midfield talent. He made 44 appearances in all competitions to help Porto win the Taca de Portugal last term, having previously won the Argentine Primera Division with Boca Juniors.

At the age of 23, Varela certainly appears to have a bright future. But as with Frendrup, he would likely prove to be an expensive buy given his short time so far in Portugal.

Joey Veerman
For Slot's first signing, it would not be a shock for Liverpool to go Dutch. If they do so, Veerman would be a leading target, having starred in PSV Eindhoven's run to winning the Eredivisie title last season.

Slot will know all about Veerman from his time as Feyenoord boss. He has also earned a regular place in the Netherlands national team and was included in their squad for Euro 2024.

Kimmich

The most experienced man on this list and he would be a truly blockbuster signing if Liverpool were able to secure his services. Kimmich has been part of a dominant Bayern Munich side, winning a plethora of trophies.

But he has just one year remaining on his contract at the Allianz Arena. Kimmich would bring a wealth of experience to Liverpool and the Reds could look to hijack Bayern's ongoing contract talks

The line from the club appears to be that they believe the squad is good enough and only a few players exist that could improve that!!

I do think we will sign 1 or 2 but probably as a reaction to some that leave first.

Barca apparently not interested in Diaz and will go for Olmo instead.

Interest in Carvalho and Van de Berg from newly promoted sides and wolfsburg. Bids seen as too low.

Can't remember when we've started a season and ain't signed anyone. Wouldn't be surprised if the owners are saying to Slot, you've beaten 2 top clubs pre-season mate, you don't really need anyone lool.

I saw a comparison between the defender ManUre got for 50+m in Yoro and Quansah. Quansah was better last season and that was in a relevant league. Sometime what we have is better.

We certainly will need a third keeper, CB and midfielder as that is what we lost. We needed a proper DM last year and didn’t fill that gap properly so my guess is we are in the market for that too, that is on the assumption that no one else leaves. I just wish we hurry up to mesh them into the team. I cannot see us promoting from the academy for all those positions.
