According to German newspaper Bild, Liverpool have agreed a deal with Bayern Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can.

The player has been linked with a move to Merseyside in recent weeks and his profile matches the calibre of player that Brendan Rodgers wants at Anfield.

The German midfielder has impressed for Leverkusen this season, having signed from Bayern Munich last summer. Can is a versatile player who can play left-back and attacking midfield but he specialises in the defensive midfield role that Liverpool are looking to strengthen to help combat their poor goals against record.

Can’s arrival could spell the end for Lucas who plays in a similar role and has struggled to regain his impressive form after sustaining serious injuries.

Have to say I'm not that impressed with the names we are being linked with.
The Echo says we are seriously looking at Lallana/Shaqiri, Lovren, Bertrand and Bony.
Are they really good enough to take us to the next level? Maybe Brendan's Achilles heel is the transfer market.

Anyone seem him play? How good is this guy?

Papers say that he's a midfielder but every time I've seen Leverkusen play, Can was playing as a LB, so I always thought that he's a LB. I think that he's a good player, likes to get involved, has a high work rate and all. Not your Aspas or Alberto, but still no more than a squad player. OK player but we don't need him.

What kind of players were you expecting mate? The likes of Lallana, Shaqiri and Bony are as good as they get. Maybe we're looking at the wrong places to strengthen but maybe we're just taking our time for midfielders and defenders. As for quality, they're as good as they get. We're already set upfront anyway, we just need players for squad rotation so I wouldn't mind Lallana/Shaqiri and Bony at all.

I agree with you about Lovren though, not convinced. He was the same at Lyon.

I have watched a fair bit of Emre Can, he is only 20 years old, he started @ Bayern Munich and moved to Bayer Leverkussen, really good player, he has it all tbh, the price linked is 10 million and is a bargain for a very very talented player

According to reports today Lallana now wants to stay at Southampton and some Bayern/Liverpool fans over on RAWK are of the opinion that Shaqiri is the ultimate YouTube player. They say we've already got better at the club in Sterling.
As for the rest, is Bertrand any better than a fit Enrique? Is Bony going to displace Suarez or Sturridge from the starting XI? If not then there's another £12m-£15m wasted on someone who is going to spend most of the season on the bench.
We need to bring in players who are clearly better than the ones already at the club.
We also need to bring in at least one Suarez/Gerrard type 'game changer', in the end I think what separated us from City was that when push came to shove in the final weeks of the season they had more Yaya Toure/Aguero type players who can grab a game by the scruff of its neck and make a difference in their squad.
I also don't know why Brendan wants to sign a Swansea player every window.

Early days guys and I think a lot of the names being thrown about is the work of agents trying to drum up interest in their players and most likely their nothing in it. The only ones that have any substance are Lallana and Cole. Both could be chucked into the team next season and would improve it. Apart from that, I'd take everything else with a huge heap of salt and not get too worked up about it at the moment. Have faith in Rodgers going for the right players but the season only ended a week ago and silly season has already started

Let's all bear in mind that noone has been signed yet. Personally Lallana is a great shout and I'll be happy if we get him in. I do get a little worried that he's gonna look at Bony or Scott Sinclair. I liked Rodwell before he went to City but he's too much of a risk I reckon.

I'd take Milner for sure. He has one year left so shouldn't cost too much, has great experience, a Henderson style work ethic and can create too.

He's 28, so at his peak too. He'll be on good wages (a City fan told me £90k a week), but if we want to move forward we need this sort of quality.

The Can rumours seem to be the main story at the moment and I've never seen him play, but his versatility looks appealing, and he could cover a range of positions. At the reported £10m this seems sensible. He's very young too, so can be improved.

Many don't fancy Caulker, but for me at 22, and for the reported £6m he seems low risk. He has over 100 EPL appearances and a load of time to improve.

Those three aren't the sexiest of signings, but in terms of giving us a bit more steel to close games out, I think they would help.

The likes of Can, Milner and Caulker would be solid signings mate but are they going to be good enough to help us bridge that gap between second and first?
As someone mentioned the other day the last two times that we have finished runners up we didn't capitalise on our momentum, Infact our signings took us backwards (Diouf, Diao, Cheyrou, Aquilani etc).
We need to push the boat out this summer and that means aiming high.

I don't disagree at all. I would imagine those three would be obtainable for around £25m total. In terms of bolstering the squad for the many more games we'll have that seems like value.

I'm all for adding one or two "push the boat out" signings too, but we don't have £100m+ and need to be realistic.
