What an acquisition he'd be. Him and Torres linking up, with Gerrard bursting through from behind... would love to see it, that's for sure.

By the sounds of it, you'll like this even more:...

The only question marks are over his ability to adapt to the Premiership.

Couldn't argue with this assessment. He's been one of my favourite players for years, capable of a subtlety of pass and movement which could be slowed down to a slow mo and set to philharmonic music. An absolutely fabulous talent at his very best, but with a physical staturw which will positvely invite the wopdongs of the Premiership to kick him out of matches.

Whather or not he retains some, most or all of his ability I've absolutely no idea, but if he has and we can find some metal shin-pads, he would be a great aquisition.

It really highlights the problem with the English game when an absolutely blinding talent like Aimar is subjected to our reservations over adaption.

You know, I actually think that Pele, Maradona, Zidane and the real Ronaldo would all have failed in England.

And that's a f*cking travesty. :no

The squad needs a boost, if this deal goes through (given the short span of time left, i doubt it will :( ), cross my arms and fingers, it will work out for him, and for the team.

We badly need flair players to unlock teams 'that park their buses in-front of their goal'.

Quality Player.

If he had not got injured 3/4 years ago, he would easily now be on the same level as Kaka and Ronaldo imo.

I don't think Zidane would fail anywhere to be honest, he had it all really.

Aimar, great player, I would agree with everyone about him not making it in the premiership

I think we are still interested in Aimar. Aimar has now got dual nationality and would not count as one of our "foreign players". I think much depends on how negotiations with Mascharano go.

......................................
Rafael BenÍtez has been cast as the innocent party during the turmoil that has engulfed Liverpool over the past two months, a position he has seemed happy to occupy and one strengthened by the support he received from Sir Alex Ferguson last week.

But with George Gillett Jr and Tom Hicks, the club’s American owners and perceived villains of the piece, having stabilised their troubled regime in recent days, the spotlight has returned to the Liverpool manager and, given the predicament of his team, hard questions are being asked of the Spaniard, too.

Seemingly lost amid the chaos off the pitch has been Liverpool’s poor run of results on it, but while they may not be enough to excuse the Americans’ decision to speak to Jürgen Klinsmann, the former Germany coach, behind BenÍtez’s back, the owners would be within their rights to demand an immediate improvement, starting against West Ham United at Upton Park this evening, as they prepare to offer substantial backing to their manager in the transfer market.

Having signed Martin Skrtel for £6.5 million from Zenit St Petersburg this month, BenÍtez expects to complete the permanent £17 million signing of Javier Mascherano in the next 48 hours and could bid for Pablo Aimar, even if the chances of securing a deal for the £10 million-rated Real Zaragoza playmaker before the close of the transfer window at midnight tomorrow are remote.

Doubts remain about BenÍtez’s long-term job security under Gillett and Hicks, but their willingness to stump up the cash for Mascherano, despite misgivings about the size of the fee, and fund other signings has increased the pressure on the manager to change his team’s ailing fortunes.

Without a win in the Barclays Premier League since Boxing Day, BenÍtez has conceded that Liverpool are out of the title race, but with his team sixth after a run of four successive draws, qualification for the Champions League is far from guaranteed. Such a scenario would be unthinkable for a club who, as revealed by The Times on Saturday, must foot annual interest bills totalling £30 million on the controversial £350 million refinancing loan that was secured last week.

Nonetheless, BenÍtez cut a relaxed figure yesterday as he looked ahead to what promises to be a critical few weeks for him and a team who have scored only four goals in their past four league matches.

“It is important for everybody to talk about football now and maybe this [the public support from the Americans] can help,” BenÍtez said. “People have been looking at me for months.

Draws have cost us eight points recently and with a game in hand, the situation would look much different if we had taken a few more of the chances we created.

“We know we need to improve, but I also know we are close. We have drawn too many games and so the confidence has gone down, but against Porto, Besiktas and Marseilles [in the Champions League], we showed we can come back and we need to recover again. Maybe we need to be more ruthless.

“It is difficult to say if it [a top-four finish] is the minimum requirement. We will try to finish as high as possible. I am positive because of my experience and also because of the players we have here. We have enough quality now and we must be confident and work harder.”

Mohamed Sissoko, the Mali midfield player, has signed a five-year contract with Juventus after completing an £8.2 million move from Liverpool yesterday.
