Latest transfer rumor

Liverpool Football Club - The Rumour Mill

Postby bunglemark2 » Wed Aug 26, 2009 8:03 pm

Point is, as I have made in another thread yesterday, we buy in these guys from abroad, we spend God knows how much on them, we invest time and effort (and it's all cumulative - that's the point !), and then they're a) sold (witness Panathanaikos last night; Leicester; other clubs throughout the leagues); b) loaned out, most likely never to return; or c) released.
What's the point in wasting money on child prodigies who add nothing tangible, not are likely to get the opportunity ?

if you sell them its not wasted money, and we would have kept Leto but it turns out the passport that we thought he had when we signed him was later found out to be dogey and his permit was taken away and not given back

And this "god knows how much" is still a pretty small number, not big enough to buy anybody too significant, especially after you take into account how much we recoup.

I wonder how much Insua is worth now? we signed him on loan and then made it permanent by sending Paletta the other way. If Insua plays for Argentina soon, while he is only 20 years old, which could happen, Argentina aren't exactly stacked at LB, his value will skyrocket.  Not saying that we should sell him, but his value as an asset will be high enough to justify the entire venture

Nemeth, Simon, Hobbs, Hammill, the list goes on and on.....
For the quantity purchased over recent seasons, how many are willing to take bets on even 10% of them getting to the big time ?
Building and planning for the future is admirable, but surely a manager needs to be a little more short-sighted than that, and understand that in the modern game, you just don't have the luxury of a 5-year plan, or even a 2-year plan unless you have a very very patient boss....

its not like we are not buying players for the present. We bought JOhnsona and Aquilani who are entering their prime.  YOu need to build for both simultaneously.  We can't afford to buy the "sure thing" youngsters like Walcott and Ramsey because their price is way above their risk.  We already got burned in a sense with this on Babel who was a bigger money potential buy.  All of these youngsters are bought for pennies relatively speaking.

We are running a low risk, high reward game. There is low risk because we don't spend much on them in the first place, and its reasonable to expect to be able to sell them on later at equal or higher prices with "trained at LFC" stamped on their back, and then every so often you get a starting left back. Not quite as often as at a club like Arsenal, but they are taking a bigger risk in bringing in bigger name and bigger money youngsters like Walcott and Ramsey (although now they are starting to make their own like Wilshere but that took years after Whenger arrived)

Well that's a start. We ought to consider such things I reckon, if we'd have asked that of a player before we signed them in the past we might have avoided Collymore, Diouf, Bellamy and Babel amongst no doubt many others.
