The squad was on fire in the last third of the season, why should it be any different now?

Cos all our direct competitors have improved ?
I actually think Manure will be better without that w@ngker from Portugal; Chavski have spent wisely; Arsenal (after two games incl. tonight) looks much better without Toure and Adebayor); and City ....well, you can't say the new signings WON'T gel....
I think we've perhaps not gone backwards, but we certainly haven't taken huge strides forward in the transfer market.

I just wish we could hear a solid story from the club explaining the facts: is it because the repayments are so extortionate that we have no dosh for transfers; is it because Rafa tied up so many on long term contracts (and were there one-off sweeteners to those to encourage them to sign on the dotted line); is it because paying off most of the 'behind the scenes' staff has cost us.....

I'm just speculating here but there are a few variables....

Greek defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos has revealed he is close to joining Liverpool.

As revealed by skysports.com earlier on Tuesday Liverpool have lined up a shock move for the former Rangers man to help bolster their defensive options.

Liverpool have moved for Kyrgiakos after being priced out of deals for Hull's Michael Turner and Stoke's Ryan Shawcross.

The Reds are believd to have agreed a fee of €3million (£2.5million) with AEK Athens for the imposing central defender.

Kyrgiakos claims on his official website he has accepted an offer from Liverpool and is set to travel to England to tie up the move.

"I would like to inform the fans of AEK that on Monday night I received an offer from Liverpool, an offer which I have accepted," Kyrgiakos told his personal website.

"LFC have come in for the lad and he wants to leave. We aren't best pleased about the manner of his declaration, but we won't hold a player against his will....
However, there is currently no final agreement with LFC. We accept it's his dream move, but have to protect the interests of AEK (and we are keen to add another few hundred grand onto the price tag). He won't be on the plane to Romania, and we don't depend on one player as AEK has been around for many a year.. etc...
etc... etc..."

Awfully long-winded. You'd never see that on .tv

Looks like it's on though. All I really remember of this guy from his days at Rangers is that he was physically huge and powerful in the air. Bit of an 'ard b@stard if I remember correctly. An experienced stop gap (he's 30) who I suppose could fill the void left by Hyypia.

The seven paragraphs mask a simple message, mate; he's on his way to Liverpool. Least it looks fairly likely he is. Why they chose to write up an essay describing the context of it all, I don't really understand. They must have their very own Mizza Maximus.

It is now on ESPN. So, there must be some leg to it. No idea about the lad and hope he is in fact very good in the air since we are giving up too many goals from set pieces. But at 2.5million, i thought Distin was valued at 1.5million....

Pompey dont want to sell Distin.. they already rejected offers from other clubs for him... they dont need to sell any more players and they see him as an important player in their side...

We already signed this fella i think so he'll be 4th choice i guess ...

now we need a backup forward and im hoping we have the money to spend now on someone whos worth it... hope we sell Voronin and Dossena before the window closes but this doesnt look like happening..

why do you want to sell the Doss? doesn't seem like we can get a good price. He is our current backup LB, because Aurelio is out and is usually out, and he is our backup left-footed left midfielder, which could come in handy if we need to start playing Yossi behind Torres.

People that we need to sell are Degen and Itandje, even though I think we would be lucky to get anything over 1.5 for the pair. They bring nothing to the table.

And then I wouldn't want to sell Voronin, unless we have some extra cash to go with what we sell him for to buy an upgrade with. Tuncay would seem like the most natural upgrade on Voronin, but I think I would prefer someone who is more of an out-and-out striker.

In the absence of Torres, whoever we bring in is not going to be talented enough to play up front on their own, and they certainly aren't going to have a magical partnership with Gerrard, so I think we should be thinking of "who would be the ideal partner for Kuyt in a 4-4-2?"  Then I think we move Gerrard back into CM and play Yossi wide right.

I would think about selling Babel if we could get 8-9 million for him because sadly, I think his price is only going to go down.

I guess if we sell Degen, Itandje, Babel, and Voronin, and any kind of cash we can scrape from the barrel, and all of a sudden we are in the 14-18 million pound range which should be able to get us some decent quality. Seems too much like fantasy football to work though. :(
