Harry Kewell heading for Liverpool exitMar 13 2008

by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

HARRY KEWELL’S Liverpool career appears to be drawing to a close after he told Rafa Benitez he wants to be allowed to travel to a training camp with a young Australia side rather than work on his fitness at Melwood.

Kewell is keen to join up with an Australia squad featuring just four senior players next week while his Liverpool team-mates are preparing for the visit of Manchester United in the Premier League.

Should Benitez relieve Kewell of his Melwood duties it will be the clearest indication yet that the injury-plagued winger has no future at the club.

Kewell was not in the Liverpool squad which travelled to Milan for Tuesday’s Champions League tie and he has not played for the first team since a fleeting substitute appearance against Barnsley last month.
With his current contract due to expire this summer and with no suggestions that he will be offered a new deal, all indications are that he is now heading towards the Anfield exit door.

The Aussie training camp takes place in Singapore and national team coach Pim Verbeek had resigned himself to working with just a group of young players while the majority of his senior stars remained with their respective clubs.

But with a World Cup qualifier against China in Kunming looming on March 26 – just days before the crucial Merseyside derby – Kewell has told Verbeek he wants to take part in the training camp in a bid to build up his fitness and to be ready for international duty.

The decision about whether he is allowed to travel to the Far East now rests with Benitez and should he give Kewell the go-ahead, it will be the clearest signal yet that his five-year stint with the Reds will not be extended.

Meanwhile, George Gillett has spoken publicly for the first time about his well documented fall-out with co-owner Tom Hicks.

During an address to a sports conference in California, Gillett was asked whether he would remain a co-owner of Liverpool.

He responded: “I would say, choose your partners wisely,” before adding, “he (Hicks) is a great guy – but he has just got a different perspective on the media.”

Liverpool set to launch sensational bid for Thierry Henry

Premiership clubs are monitoring Thierry Henry’s situation at Barcelona.

Villarreal midfielder Robert Pires admitted this week that his former Arsenal teammate was unhappy at Barca.

The Sun says Henry’s unrest is likely to trigger a wave of interest in Europe’s top clubs - including the Premier League’s big guns.

However, there is no way he would return to Arsenal where he is regarded as a legend - because boss Arsene Wenger has moved on and is rebuilding his team around strikers Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie.

Henry cost Barcelona £16million when he was sold by Arsenal last summer.

The Frenchman was linked with Liverpool earlier this season.

I would take henry any day , imagine him and torres upfront , i'd say henry's got abt 3 more years ahead of him before he quits

Not too sure I would take Henry tbh. Not at all costs anyway. Don't get me wrong, he was simply excellent for most of his time at Arsenal, but I just feel he's lost something over the last couple of seasons (as I recall, he wasn't that great for Arsenal in his last season there due to injuries... though I might be wrong on that one). I think we should look to get someone a bit younger in to partner Torres instead. Someone with a lot of hunger for winning medals like Torres himself. Who that person is though, I'll leave up to Rafa to find out  :D

he is said to be unhappy cause of his divorce and not being to see his daughter as often as he would like - 5 times in 8 months.

TBH I think Henry is damaged goods now and Wenger appears to have got shut at the right time.
I believe that Henry has a recurring back problem now that will be with him for the rest of his career and the older he gets the more often it is likely to keep him in the treatment room.
Two years ago I'd have snapped anyone's hands off to have him at Liverpool but now he's too much of gamble.

worth a gamble if he's available and if we don't have to pay an arm and a leg IMO... heck we even bought arsenal reject pennant... this is an arsenal legend... and with Torres, henry won't have to lead the line so there won't be too much pressure on him anymore...  will complement nicely...

******************************************

After victory at the Nou Camp on the weekend, Pires told Ona FM: "If I was to tell you that Henry is well, I'd be a liar.

"It is difficult because he never plays in his preferred position, he is always on the left or right. I know him and I know that he is not right. What he wants is to play upfront with another striker.

"People know that he is not playing in his best position and I am a little sad to see where how he is playing. He also was angry because in the game he was unable to help Barcelona as he had wanted."

*************************

if we do get him we'll have to abandon the 4-2-3-1 though...  :D

Alonso's days at Anfield are numbered IMO and with Lucas looking a superb talent I am not too worried. A swap deal would be a good move for us as Henry still has 2-3 years left in him and I think he'd be a great foil for Torres.

Henry has been playing an awful lot for someone injured, IMO wouldn't swap Alonso for him unless Iniesta/Deco is somehow part of it - Jury is still out on Lucas. Not a rumour but I would love to see J.A Reyes at Liverpool next season, an improved version of Kuyt who can also play both wings, would solve several problems at a low cost.

Henry has been played on the wing which has caused him to struggle just like at Juve before he joined Arsenal, Henry plus around £5m would be a good deal.

David Villa: I could be open to offers
By Charlie Caroe
Last Updated: 1:05pm GMT 17/03/2008

Valencia striker David Villa will have put several Premier League clubs after admitting he could leave the Mestalla at the end of the season.

Villa, 26, said; "I have always listened when offers have been made and I have made decisions about my career, always in conjunction with the club because I have a contract.

"I have to think about my future, and I will do so.

"I will listen to everything, as I always have done."

The Spanish international has attracted the attention from English sides before, but moved from Real Zaragoza to Valencia in the summer of 2005 for £8.2 million.

Valencia have been struggling this season and have suffered since the departure of Rafael Benitez who won two La Liga titles and Uefa Cup for the club.

Villa has scored just eight times in 19 league matches this season and Valencia are currently 26 points behind league leaders Real Madrid in tenth place.

Tottenham are the club most recently linked to a move for Villa, with rumours of a £25 million pound move during the January transfer window, although Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United are also thought to be interested.

Villa's agent Jose Luis Tamargo said in January: "Many clubs have contacted me to ask about the chances of a player who is guaranteed to score goals in England.

"But I am convinced if Spurs present an offer Valencia will study the subject."
