Five-live, greatest team of all debate. - They're trying to push manure!

The Premiership - General Discussion

Postby spion » Tue Nov 15, 2005 9:59 am

Current trailer on radio five-live is asking who was the graetest team of all time during the trailer they play manure winning the euro cup. Now our win last season may have been an act of god but I seem to remember Basler hitting the woodwork twice for Bayern & the scummers clearing there line a couple of times too. Would they have come back from 3-0 down at half time?? Liverpool's 86/87 team for me was the best I've seen in my life & I remember us beating Forrest 5-0 twice(they even released the video "The Mighty Reds")! If we had not been banned from europe I honestly think we'd be singing eight times instead of five & Kenny D would be regarded by world football the true great he is. The time of Barnes, Beardo, Aldridge, Mcmahon & Hansen. That season even Steve "Cheeko" Nichol scored a hatrick against Newcastle which was not bad for a right back. We were the best in the world at that time but sadly we couldnt show the rest & had to make do with hammering all put before us. YNWA

To be fair though, the team was not up to much, just look at our league/other cup form last season.

The game was the greatest ever, but the team was distinctly average.

its :censored: to say football is better now and that theyre athletes now. My mate reckons England 66 would get easily beaten by england now! They may be fitter now but do they have the heart to win as much as yesterdays player? Mutu and others still smoke still, so thats not gone either.
BTW he says that Arsenal 03/04 would beat Liverpool 70s80s!
As you can imagine he is a gooner.

There were about three different sides/formations in that period, all great but never ONE team.
We are the only club to do it over and over and over and over and over etc etc , again

The '66 vs current England squad is irrelevant. However, I feel the current team would be much quicker and this would give them the edge. Ofcourse, if the game was played in the manner it was in '66, the current crop would be f*cked.
The injuries the nancy boys of today get which makes them miss half a season wouldn't even stop the world cup winners playing the rest of the game.
The greatest team has to be the 77-84 one, as they battered all before them.

AC Milan of 1988-1990 were the greatest modern club team.

I agree Ac Milan where unbelieveable in that period. Masterclass -The real madrid 5-0 thrashing ,even the toughest opposition looked totally clueless against them. The greatest English team was Liverpool 77-84-no doubt about it.

The best that I've seen is that AC Milan team. Howver Real Madrid of the 1950s, Ajax and Bayarn Munich of the 1970s must also be noted (3 ECs in a row- each).

I agree that there wasn't really an LFC team that won 4 ECs (Phil Neal apart -was there anyone else).

Also, what great South American teams have there been? was it always a weaker place for club football? I don't know.

INternationally the Brazil 1970 team or you could argue Brazil 1958-1970 or 1962-1970(if you feel that the 1958 boys were gone by 1970, bar Pele)

Italy retained it in 1934 so they must warrant a mention too. Even Germany 1982-1990 - 3 finals in a row.

Modern day teams would beat the older teams, even lfc in 1980s wouldn't challenge todays top teams but greatness is in your time for the standards of the day.

With these type of surveys I think they need to define a certain category. It's too broad to survey in all honesty.

English CLUB team would have a few candidates. LFC obviously (choose from the 77, 78,84,87 sides and Arsenal for their unbeaten season 2003/04.

Co-oncidentally Liverpool and Arsenal are the only two current Prem sides teams to win the Title three seasons on the bounce (Huddersfield did it as well in the 20's).

Through gritted teeth you have to consider the 1999 United side. Its true to say they scrawped the final but they were the best team in Europe that season and to win the title , FA Cup and European in one season is remarkable.

Internationally I'd go for Brazil 1970 side, simply incredible ability, flair and skillful beyond compare .
