Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby azriahmad » Sun Sep 26, 2004 3:31 am

I saw the match ans I think Baros played really well and he linked up with his other team-mates very well, for a change. Let's hope that this is a permanent improvement to his game.

The other thing is, guys and gals, this was a game against Norwich after all (and at home) the likes of whom we should beat. The worry still is our travelling form and the "zonal marking system" which is employed even at set-pieces. That was what made Liverpool concede two goals against manure.

I read in the Yahoo! website on Liverpool that it has become a concern of Benithez but he still wants to employ this zonal marking during set pieces when all of the other Premiership teams use man marking at set peices.

Before we played Man Utd we didn't allow a goal from set-pieces, we dropped our guard and let in two goals from set-pieces. This can't happen against Chelsea, I hope the Reds realize this before its too late

The problem is that we use a zonal marking system, very much like teams on the continent. Over there, their heading abilities are not as strong as the British teams. That is why you see that british teams are very strong on set-pieces against European opponents but more than most of the time get outplayed as their technical abilities are generally better.

Nothing wrong in using a zonal marking system at set pieces if your defenders can "read" the potential threats very well, but we don't have those kind of defenders anymore - Hansen, Lawrenson, Gillespie. No matter how well he plays, Carra is not a natural central defenders and he has been found wanting when anticipating potential threats.

Hyppia, with his towering strengths should be deployed to man mark at set peices, and not zonal mark. Benithez is aware of this problem. I hope he can plug this weakness.

A midget centreback scoring 2 goals against us is something of a freak. :D  It will most likely never happen again.

I would not worry about the defence against chelsea, only about dudek........

The sign of a good player is someone who can turn it on week in week out. His performance yesterday shows he can do it but there's more too it than that. He needs to link up with Cisse etc for the team to benefit, and lets hope we see it.

Theres no doubt he will take chances but his link up play and passing can def improve. He did play alot better yesterday and he probably deserves the chance to to play that lone striker role when we are away from home. However its about time time he took some responsibility now he is the most experienced striker at the club now and needs to prove week in week out that he is number 1 and can score 25 goals a season. Its still eartly days yet and he prob needs someone to play alongside but theres a way to go yet. But yep good performance, well done Milan.
The man who came to merseyside from Newcastle, the man who says he's part of Liverpool as much as the Liver building. When he was needed Alan Kennedy was there. And with now just 8 minutes to go it could be that Alan Kennedy has made a little history.

baros played well again but you can bet your bottom dollar that he'll be dropped to the bench again against chelsea. with us being away you can understand rafa packing the midfield and playing 4-5-1. :(

I'm going to buck the trend here by saying that while I think Baros is a handy player I don't think he the answer to our long term questions in the front line as neither Cisse nor him are box players and I think we need a poacher in the Rush, Aldridge or Fowler mould if we are to really go places.

Baros has loads of room to improve and the guy needs to start bringing other players into the game. His run in the last 5 minutes of yesterday's match where he dribbled into the Norwich box typifies the good and bad sides to Baros.

He has a lot of strengths to his game but he's not going to score 25 goals a season playing the way he is now.

I'll get slaughtered for these comments but time will prove me right, as will Benetiz who will eventually ditch Baros for someone like Mista.

not necessarily slaughtered jbg but laughed at more like.
if carries on this run of form he'll easily get 25 goals, as he;s scoring in most starting appearances, and as sub.

i agree we need a poacher. baros isnt that. that makes no difference to how good a player he is.
its not the chilli sauce on kebabs that give you ring-sting, its the actual meat. had one without chilli, and still had ring-sting. the chilli's only there to mask the nonsense they stuff inside that bread.

It was so predictable that this thread would get the one major baros critic to respond.Stu regularly sticks his foot in his mouth..his comments tonight only confirm he wasn't at the game.I'm not saying Milan Baros will turn out to be a world class striker but the lad deserves credit when its due, even if it sticks in the throat of the fans still mourning the demise of the "best forward they have ever seen"...the "galactico" Owen

I ALWAYS give Baros credit. But not more than he deserves. For your information, i was at the game yesterday. Alonso and Garcia shown CLASS and BRAINS and TECHNIQUE and AWARENESS!! Baros shown aggression, pace and a distinct lack of awareness.

As i've said a million times... Baros is a good player who gives his all. He always gives the team something even if its only effort but he isn't the long term answer and he isn't a player without serious faults.

Theres probably 10 or more better strikers in the premier league.

Have to agree with you about baros, as great a finisher he is his overall awareness and link up play leaves a lot to be desired at times. I can't see him starting many of the champions league games or big premiership games, because posession is far to important.
