Straight away we've nothing in the middle of the park to run games, personally I don't see why we don't simply dump Lucas and play a second striker or Benayoun in a 4-1-4-1 formation (or 4-1-2-3 if you prefer). That or a 4-1-3-2 formation except we've limited options for a second striker that doesn't involve taking Kuyt off the right

exactly what i said earlier on in the thread. last season the players we had we ideal for 4-2-3-1. thi season i don't think we get enough in that system against the better sides. you can get away with playing gerrard in there against the lesser sides but against the very best you need him higher up the pitch.

personally i'd like to se us go 4-3-3 when everybody's fit with mascherano, aquilani and gerrard in a central three. you could then have two wide men (kuyt and babel both play in this system for holland) with torres upfront on his own. as it stands, i don't think 4-2-3-1 suits aquilani either.

this thing about lucas only passing sideways or backwards is a complete miss and proves that people are criticizing him without really watching his game. i've seen him make plenty of forward passes and become part of several attacks. granted he'll more often than not play it safe, and granted he isn't of the quality we need. but if people are going to have a pop at him at least do it for something true.

Yes I am having a pop at him and I'm doing it for something true as well. I 'have' seen him play very very closely, and he has not been a part of any attack so far. And no, he hasn't played any meaningful forward passes (not that he knows how to do it) so far as well.

i meant myth of course, not miss (i've got a hangover...).

i'll have to disagree with you there, festy. i'm by no means his biggest fan but the guy knows how to pass forward. whether many of these are effective or not is another matter.

I ain't saying he doesn't know how to pass forward. But at least in Liverpool shirt I haven't seen him done that and that doesn't mean I'm 100% accurate. Passing at an angle of 95 degrees isn't much different from passing at an angle of 90 degrees in football.

Lucas beacause we have no one else.... ? i would have dropped Gerrard to centre mid alongside mashman and tried Babel? Ngog? or Nemeth (before he got loaned out) Gerrard would have been able to get more of a grip on the game in midfield which is where we are struggling at the min.

Lucas may also have been told to play that way and restricted to play his natural game by Benitez (he has done that with lots of players mind you). Even if that's the case, it's not benefiting us.

ok, call me an anal bas'tard but i put together a quick chalkboard of lucas's passing from the sunderland game. there's a number of forward passes, some even in the opposition area - thus being attacking forward passes.

festy, the case for the defence rests... you have the stand

:D

here's a chalkboard comparing Gerrard and Lucas for the Hull game. Which one was the worst passer again?
