that's what i mean... suppose he only plays a bit -part role..... off subs ..etc ..... and still they get 1m over 3 yrs for aquilani doing nothin much... winning league etc is fine .... thats pretty common .... but us being a top side ... this CL qualification clause isn't to my liking.

we get much more than 300k for being in the CL, basic fee is around £2.6m and it's £300k+ for each group match won.
Paying that each season is nothing compared to what being in the competition brings in.

Because that's how deals work these days. By the same logic, why should we pay another club when one of our players scores? Why should we pay when they play for certain numbers of games for us?

By including clauses like these it means that both the buying and selling clubs are happy. If it was a flat fee, Roma would want more than 20m Euros. By including the clauses we give them an incentive to sell to us cheaper and we only end up paying more if he is a good player for us. If he's bad then we sell him on (e.g. Keane) and don't pay the add ons.

Because of the huge fees involved in the game today the days of actually paying for a transfer upfront are gone. It's all paid in instalments and clauses which is why Portsmouth still owed us for Crouch and why Utd are still to pay fully for Rooney.

So to answer your question, the CL clause is more to delay us paying them money. We'll have earned the £300k on interest in the bank (assuming we have any :p ) by the time we need to pay it.

just read what JAR said about the lad when he turned up at roma andi think 300k a season isn't that bad if he can perform a slightly more attacking role for us than xabi ever did.

for me it is sad to see a player of xabi qualilty leave the club as he improves any team he plays in, but given a choice of him or masha to leave for a profit and it had to be xabi imho, the jan molby of our generation(but not as chunky)

i just hope that tossenna fecks off and this new lad is a damn sight more effective in the epl that the next left back for the world champs!!!!!!!

Dossena isnt a regular starter for Italy... Dont know where that idea comes from but just because he makes the squad every now and then doesnt make him a regular starter for his country... he played 10 games for Italy.. 5 starts and 5 as a sub... 4 of those 10 games being friendlies... think it has more to do with the regular players being injured/unavailable than him being the best option they have.. the fact that he plays for a big club is probably the only reason hes called up to the international squad in the first place, not like we've never heard that one before ...

To be fair the only other left back they have is grosso and if dossena can replicate the form he showed in the italian league , he'd be their first choice for sure. He has looked better towards the tail end of last season , he's a goal threat , crossing is good , he's got it in him somewhere to be a good player.
